Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Looks like our timelines match, then. No reason to tell the media because you never know when you are going to find your draft target floating on a swan in Vegas. Keep that backup plan in your back pocket.

Plus in a draft like this where there wasn't really a consensus number one pick keeping your pick secret has some value. Never know who the teams picking after you might covet.

Yo, I hope that happens.

But that post was still hilariously egotistical, though. Like damn.

You're damn right it was egotistical.

Let me guess, you were one of the pro-Josh Allen morons?

I would've taken Allen had he fell to day 4. :chuckle:

He really should have been a day three pick. That's where you pick guys who have one or two good qualities and a shitload of issues that need fixing. The fact he went top ten was insane.

I think that, if Barkley is there at four, you absolutely consider it.

But drafting a RB first overall when there are three good QB options on the table and you haven't had a franchise QB in like thirty years? Madness.

The scenario was pretty much this.

If the Browns didn't take Mayfield? The PATRIOTS were on the phone with the Giants to take him. I'm not even kidding with that.

Allegedly? The Jets were also saying similar things to Baker pre-draft saying they wanted him "depending on what the Browns were doing".

People are going to likely mention that this year. But it appears that Mayfield was QB1 for the entire league this year. There was no situation where you could have swung the Mayfield/Barkley tandem.

It was either QB1 or Player1. There was no scenario for both. You take Barkley? You are stuck taking QB3 (likely Rosen or Allen).

Definitely politely disagree.

I don't even need to get in depth about it, the episode was good and I'm anxious for next week.

Just didn’t like the phony Cajuste story line really all that much.

How is it even possible for your child to not know you had a third heart attack?

Also Myles Garrett part was cheesy as hell.

I don’t think Mayfield was QB1 for the entire league, but I completely agree that there was no chance of him making it to 4.

I absolutely believe he was QB1 for the Jets and the Patriots and possibly also the Giants.

That’s the one thing that kills me about people who crapped on the Browns for not selecting Barkley or Chubb at 1 and grabbing a passer on the comeback at 4. Because that incorrectly assumes that every team in the league graded these four quarterbacks all equally and wouldn’t have a preference on any one over the others.

Yes, the Browns could’ve drafted Barkley at one and then gotten a quarterback at four, but not every quarterback would’ve been available at four. And they didn’t want just any quarterback, they wanted Mayfield.

The only way Barkley/Mayfield could have happened would have been for the Browns to pick Barkley at one and then trade up to 2 from 4 to leap the Jets. But that seems unrealistic. The Giants, with Barkley off the board, could have just taken Mayfield for themselves or taken Darnold at 2 at that point leaving the Browns with the Allen/Rosen scraps (although I know there are several people on this board who wouldn’t consider Rosen scraps).

I don’t care if we had the 1st and 2nd pick instead of 1st and 4th...

I still would’ve taken Denzel Ward over Saquon Barkley 100 times out of 100.

A lockdown corner for 10 years is so much better than any RB.

Not to mention that Barkley’s running style has some question marks.

Just can’t be bothered by conversations w people who can’t grasp what you can.

Plus, we have Duke and he is a proven NFL player that can get open.

With all of the noise around the draft, we navigated it quite well. We will see how Chubb turns out (would have to be a major hit to justify a running back that high), but at the end of the day, we had a Grand Canyon sized hole at QB last year, and we were absolutely dreadful against the pass. We not only infused talent into those positions via the draft, but also we got veterans to help them realize their potential.

It isn’t fool proof and of course it’s too early to tell if our evaluations were correct, but I feel we systematically went about it the right way, and although it’s early, our first round players are giving us plenty of reasons to be cautiously optimistic.
