I am becoming obsessed with the idea that the Cavs might be able to get Robert Covington from the Sixers. I agree that there is little evidence this is possible, but bear with me while I explain my obsession:

--Covington is a young (25) player who is quick enough to play on the perimeter but long enough (6'9") and just big enough (215) to guard multiple positions.

--since the Sixers are so bad he has proven himself playing significant minutes against other teams starters. He consistently shoots about 36% from 3, and since he is one of the only good shooters on the Sixers he is a major focus of the opponents defense.

--he frequently defends the very best forwards in the league, including Durant...he is not an elite defender but definitely a plus defender. With his length, playing against the Warriors he could credibly guard Durant, Klay Thompson, Iguodala, Livingston, possibly Green

--he is on one of those rock bottom Sixers contracts so he makes only a million a year this year and next.

--he is just bad enough to be available because he has limited upside (a bit of 'tweener, a little slow for a SF and small for a PF), and the Sixers have a lot of young players they want to develop. Now they have Saric, Simmons, and this new French guy to get minutes for, plus Embiid should play this year and of course the frontcourt is locked down with Okafor and Noel plus Embiid being back.

--now imagine what we could do with a guy like that OFF THE BENCH, or imagine the open looks he would get next to Lebron or Kyrie! He would give us a ton of nice things on the second unit and would serve as great injury insurance for our senior citizens (Dunleavey and RJ)

--he is just bad enough to be available, just good enough to be an AWESOME depth/bench player, cheap enough to be affordable!

--How many guys like that are there in the entire NBA? Just one -- ROBERT COVINGTON!

The Sixers let a rookie of the year go for a single top five protected pick. Covington is better than we could get for any first round pick we would realistically have over the next couple of years (which will all be well into the 20s).

Make it happen, Griff! (or, alternatively, someone tell me why I'm wrong)

I'd love Covington, but I don't see it happening.

But you gotta try! You gotta try!

You have to admit, it's a lot more likely than getting DeMarcus Cousins or Jimmy Butler. If we're going to fantasize around here, let's do it about something that's at least vaguely possible.

Would rather trade for Jerami Grant...elite defender, offensive game limited. But with the Sixers loaded in front court, Grant would be an ideal 3/4 off bench should Philly want to unload.

Grant shouldn't take much but if I had to look for a 3/D wing from Philly other than Covington, it'd be Hollis Thompson.

Philly needed an experience PG no?

Bryan Colangelo and Griff are tight as well. Mo - Covington trade. Make it happen, folks.

Seriously though, that ain't happening. Philly needs shooters. Especially 3&D guys alongside Simmons. And Covington is a solid 3&D guy.

I don't think it's impossible the Colangelos make him available as they look to tailor the roster to a future around Ben Simmons, but at the same time Philly fans won't like it since he's pretty much the #TrustTheProcess Legend.

When you get a chance, take a look at what Robert Covington is doing so far this year. One of the worst seasons by a player getting as many minutes as he gets probably ever.

He has all the looks of being a good player with none of the game.

Bad enough that someone would trade him for a cranky semi-retired Mo Williams and a 2020 1st rounder or some D-league all-stars (Liggins/McRae)? :)

Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane.

The only thing appealing about Covington is his contract combined with the sad state of small forwards in the NBA. His game is weak.

He has the look of someone who should be good. He moves like someone who should be good. He is smooth like someone who should be good.

He's just bad. I don't know if it's a case of a guy with all the tools but lacks work ethic, or if he really doesn't have the tools and just looks like he should.

I'm sure he won't remain this putrid all year but man, this has to be one of the worst starts for any player averaging over 25 minutes a game of all time. Here's his last 4 games: 1-7, 1-7, 1-12, 1-5. My god.

He needs a change of scenery. He would be asked to do less here in a more defined role. Plus he'll get to win some games for once.

Sounds like a Dion Waiters-esque stretch...
