Rodney Hood: Won't be missed

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Cut him.

Only option outside of firing Lue to keep him off the court.

There is a near zero upside to playing him.

No one is gonna give up a single valuable asset for him and even if they were, he has a no-trade clause.

Instead he just stands in the way of two younger guards, one of whom is locked up for a long time.

So cut him and stop Lue destroying whatever useful purpose we could find in this season.

It’s alarming how bad this guy has been away from Utah.

Like... we all knew coming in he wasn’t great defensively and had some toughness concerns, but the Cavs straight up got a lemon.

This guy is pretty much horrendous at anything that’s not chucking a midrange jumper.

Can’t finish, can’t handle, can’t shoot threes, can’t defend, can’t rebound. Doesn’t play particularly hard.

Just an absolute mess.

I still believe Rondney would be a good player on a team that has the right structure. He has skills but he needs a play maker to get him the ball. He needs a team that is a cohesive defensive unit that keeps him engaged. Right now the Cavs lack both of those things, and that brings his main weakness into the spot light. Rodney needs to play on a team where his lack of heart isn’t so obvious.

I really think Hood could be a really good player for a contender, maybe as your 4th or 5th scorer. I think the Thunder would be a great fit for him.

Wait, what? Is this real? Rodney seriously has a no-trade clause?

Anyone who signs a qualifying offer does.

Wow, I am shocked I didn't know this. I feel like I should have known this.

Hopefully Rodney doesn't actually try to take advantage of that, because he could always just waive it.

On the positive side of it, I don't exactly see many teams willing/wanting to take him anyway.

Yeah, I'm hopping on this bandwagon too.

I would actually first at least try to trade him. I would approach him and let him know what teams have offered us a second round pick. If he's willing to allow the trade, you make it. He's made it pretty clear that he's never really wanted to be here. Give him an out, he may just take it. I'd literally take the best second rounder that is likely to convey that we'd get offered. Probably looking at something in the 48-60 range, a team like OKC or Houston or something could easily take a flyer on him for a crappy 2nd round pick. It's at least something.

If not, you waive him and move on.

You could likely trade him for a top 55 protected 2nd.....which is just a glorified paper asset that amounts to nothing. But he would at least be off our books and roster. He's young and on a zero deal, so someone would talk themselves in to it. I also seriously doubt Hood would block any trade. He seems miserable.

One of the things that has been concerning with Hood is that he either is ignoring what he should be doing or is not being told what he should be doing (I think it is the latter). Either outcome is bad.

If the main contributing skills you have as a player are as a floor stretching, high volume 3 pt shooter (who can chip in on defense), that is quite literally how he succeeds in the NBA....by doing those things well. That is how he gets a new contract.

Instead, he is trying to shoot off the dribble, push himself off the 3 point line in an effort to "create", hang out on D.......I mean, he seriously can't be doing these things without some encouragement from the staff can he? Just deviate from all the things he showed in the first 3-4 years of his career that made him a valuable contributing player?

If he weren't listening, he wouldn't be getting minutes (or you would hope). The fact that he is literally not focusing on anything he's capable of doing well and STILL playing, is one of the clearest signs that our staff has no clue what they are doing IMO.

He really seems like a player that needs all his plays scripted for him. A good coaching staff would explain how bad mid range 2s are and that's basically all Hood is taking now. I think 7 of his 11-12 attempts a game needs to be 3s. Limit him to 2 or 3 mid range shots a game.

Further, Hood's problems go beyond falling in the love with his midrange game and needing more scripted plays on the offensive end. He also seems genuinely averse to physical contact on the defensive end. He's the ultimate soft player who will never be even an average defensive player because he simply doesn't like the "dirty" aspects of the NBA game.

The Thunder are my other team. I wouldn't say they'd be a great fit, but they certainly would be a better fit for him than the Cavs. Hood has proven he cannot take any pressure, and on the Thunder he'd have Westbrook and George to take some of it off him. But Donovan is only marginally better of a coach than Lue, so I don't think Hood would really learn much more. Hood would be best in an extremely structured system, more like Toronto or San Antonio.

I would think a team like Sac might have some interest for a 2nd. Bogdanovic is injured and they actually gave minutes to McLemore last night. Maybe Hood would approve that kind of trade considering the Kings also have capspace to resign him if they want.

They are a team to watch for sure. We almost agreed to a Sign&trader for Hood to the Kings this summer, but they wouldn't pony up the money he wanted($9-10 million a year...I think Sac's best offer was in the 7-8 range...Hood really messed up not taking it, IMO.)

He cost his family millions by taking the q offer.
