Rodney Hood: Won't be missed

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Should have just let him go after he turned down the contract extension.

Meh. I think he was worth a flyer. I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on just not being ready to play next to LeBron on a finals team.

I'm gonna give him 10 or so games. If he doesn't regain his ability to make threes and makes no improvements anywhere while still forcing double-digit contested mid-range jumpers every night, I would ship him off to Sacramento for a 2nd round pick---(there is mutual interest between Hood and the Kings....they tried to acquire him via S&T over the summer but wouldn't give him a big contract..I think they capped out at around 8 million a year on their offer...I think Hood would be fine with allowing that trade to go through especially if he continues to struggle).

I totally understand that point of view, and I dont think its wrong. Frankly, it makes sense, and i can't fault the FO for doing it.

That said, given the stage they're currently in, having guys who want to be there is important. It does not seem as if that is the case for Hood.

I think we still need to give Rodney time. Lue has to help guys play to their strengths and build a comfortable element of HOW we are scoring points.

I saw some very positive things from Hood yesterday and I saw the forced shots and reluctance to take open three's.

When you break someone's flow, it takes a small bit to gain it back. I think Rodney will be fine and will become a long term piece, much to the chagrin of nearly every poster on this board.

What is the point of a long term piece with more anxiety issues than my cat? He CANNOT handle pressure. Physically cannot handle stress. And you want him as a long term piece? Trade this dude for whatever scrap of a draft pick you can get and be done with him. Said it during the off season, continues to prove me right.

I thought Hood looked ok last night. He was more aggressive and actually tried some on defense. If he can find his shot again, he should be a decent player in the NBA. I think we are a bit to harsh on him right now. I get the hate for Tristan, I would even say Clarkson is a black hole, but that's ok coming off the bench, but Hood still has potential to turn out ok.

Is Hood an all star? ofcourse not, but I will take ok at this point.

No arguments here on that point either. I would be very very surprised if he were with the team beyond this year barring an unforseen turnaround/change in attitude/play.

I just don't understand what happened to his 3pt shot. He actually changed his form.

Do you guys remember that shooting workout with Phil Handy when we first acquired him? yep....

LMAO... this is literally insane.

LMAO... this is literally insane.

What i'm saying is insane? :chuckle:

he never used to hop into his shot. After this workout he started kinda 1-2 hopping into his spot up shots. He also used to jump much higher on his jump shots. Remember how he shot differently against the Celtics?

Now just last night, do you remember his missed wide open 3pt shot from the left corner to start the game? Didn't it look just like this? View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRGUnE9hVdQ

I'm telling you...it's Phil Handy.

OMG...you are so right. Fuck Phil Handy.

Not seeing a number 2 from him at all. He doesn't affect the game in any way unless he shoots the ball

I'm telling you...it's Phil Handy.

Yes, it is insane.

1. You seem to be insinuating that Hood's drop in three point percentage is a result of ONE shooting session, of which you posted a 3 minute video.

2. What Handy is demonstrating in that video is basic fundamentals. Hopping into the jumper. I know you know that.

3. There's no evidence that this is some unseen new technique, given that Hood can be seen hopping into some of his shots in Utah:

That's literally the first shot on the first video I found on YouTube of him doing exactly what Handy would show him two years later. There's video of him hopping into his jumpers, standing still, and doing the 1-2 step into it. There's no evidence that he changed his shot.

4. I went back and watched both threes he took last night. In neither case did he do what Handy demonstrated.

5. However, let's ignore all of that, and, as a hypothetical, let's say you're right. Let's assume that one 3 minute shooting session with Phil Handy is responsible for turning a decent shooter into a broken mess who actually turns down open threes. What does that say for his mentality? He'd been in the league for 3.5 years before coming to Cleveland. He played at Duke. He's proven himself as a shooter. If what you're suggesting is correct, that Handy somehow undid all of Hood's hard work in three minutes... why keep Hood around? The guy is clearly unfit to play in this league if that's true.

6. But, obviously, that's insane. There's no evidence to suggest that that was the case. What's more likely is that Hood went from being a featured piece in Utah to a complementary player in Cleveland. His three point percentage dropped 3.7% points from Utah to Cleveland, but he also took half as many threes and his shots were coming from different spots. And 21 games is a small sample size. It's very likely he's still adjusting.

7. That said, I still don't want them to keep the guy because it's clear he doesn't want to be here, and he turns down open threes for contested twos. I can live with him missing good looks, but not with him turning those looks down.

I think Rodney is insane. He turned down 7m a year to prove what exactly? That he can hit some mid range shots?

He is very one dimensional. If he was just launching 3s he would make more sense. How is he getting more than 7m playing his game like this?

No point kicking him to the curb this early, but he made the worst decision for his family he will ever make not taking that money.

Hood said himself that he is not as comfortable shooting spot-up jumpers, he needs a dribble to set himself...and the last thing we need is him shooting shots he is not confident will go in.

Then he needs to learn how to dribble because, well, he can't.
