Rodney Hood: Won't be missed

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
What up with his defense?
Just doesn't have the lateral movement?
Lazy?
Low Motor/Energy?

He should be able to thrive on offense with Lebron but still with no rim protection it would be nice if he was just average on defense. If he can play D you can run him with Osman, Lebron, Nance, and Green to get a lineup that maybe the fastest up and down the court in the NBA

Think J.R is still gonna start, correct me if I'm wrong but didn't J.R get upset and pout when we first got wade, and lue started wade over J.R?

Yeah but little different scenario here. Wade was 36 and Hood is what 24 or 25? Big difference, Smith should sit for sure.

Hill and Smith should definitely play together ..

Sadly, I think JR Smith is only maximized as a starter; but, he's just not played very well. If anything, we should only give it 10 games or so to see if the roster changes and adding Hill will jolt Smith into playing consistently and providing some defense. Because if he's going to be a poor defender, then there's no reason whatsoever to not play the superior Hood.

I rather we scratch JR and just start Cedi.

Don't care about JR's recent hot production. Still an atrocious defender.

It's sad, that if we played Cedi, and developed him early on, I think he'd make a valuable rotational player in the playoffs.

I do think he's good. Our coach is just that atrocious.

Thing is, we have zero defensive wings any more, and JR Smith is the one player on the wing that has actually shown an ability to defend. So... while he's been terrible, we very well may need him down the road.

So, my view is that there's enough minutes to go around at the wing positions between Hood, Smith and Osman. I'm much more concerned with Smith getting back into form considering his contract. We didn't trade him, so now's the time to try and see if we can fix the problem.

But this should be Smith's last year as a Cavalier though.. He becomes an pseudo-expiring after this season, and he'll be 33 years old next year; and with that being said I'm not sure if he has much left in the tank. So I do understand the idea of having him split time with Cedi... but Cedi really should be James' backup at SF, with Green playing more minutes at the 4.

Hill/Clarkson
Hood/Smith
James/Osman
Love/Green
Thompson/Nance (for now)

I also expect to see lineups with Clarkson and Hill on the floor simultaneously, either with Hood or James at the 3.

I still think our defense will struggle a lot. Clarkson is an awful defender.

Hill is good, they at least upgrade the 1 defensively. Nance although a good defender, will be forced to defend at the 5 a lot.

I think we are a better team, definitely, but defense is still a problem.

Yeah, defensively, we have no answers on the wings... It's a shame. Coupled with having basically no true rim protection, it's fairly obvious that we're not going to beat Golden State defensively. We'll need to get lucky, either they get key injuries or go cold at the wrong time.

Tony Allen got waived not too long ago, wouldn't mind using one of the free roster spots. Would use him in spot duty to guard any wings that start going off, don't think it would hurt

Edit:
Didn't realize that Allen had a set back coming back from his injury so not sure it would be that great after reading about

I think Nance will be very useful against Golden State. He cant defend bigger centers like Tristan or even Love because of strength, but he will be very good against Draymond when GS goes small. In the past they havent made specific moves to beat GS, just be the best team possible, but in this case it seems these moves were made with GS in mind for sure.

PS, Hood has flourished offensively in Utah both as a starter and off the bench. Either way he will get minutes and is restricted so we should be able to keep him.

I think we need Brook Lopez. Not going to top GS; not even going there.

Still think Thompson has to be replaced, and limited. You get Brook, your rotational big men looks like Brook, Love, then Nance as our three man rotation of bigs.

I'm still overall happy we got rid of IT, Crowder, Shump, and Rose. None of them should see rotational minutes far as I'm concern on this team.

TT and JR still will at this point, one of them has to be limited or outed. I'd prefer TT.

So, if we get Brook, this team definitely is better, without question, than where they were.

Again, it's not going to top GS. I don't think anything would have.

Lets say Hood plays well here the rest of the year... I know its hard to project at this point but what potential dollars are we talking if we want to lock this guy up after this year longer term? 4 years 60 million? Too much?

No way he won’t get that. He’s an RFA. Let him get an offer. There’s not a lot of money out there in the offseason and I doubt the ones who do have money will spend it on someone who is injury prone. I’d say 4 years 45M at most. But I could see him taking the QO.

I'd really like to keep him as a 3 rd scorer to Love and Lebron or as a super sub lighting it up off the bench if we trade that Brooklyn pick for an established star type player. Hope your right.

He's most likely looking at around $11M/yr.. So $44M/4Y in this market, with the diminishing amount of cap space, with the 4th year as a player option. That would probably be a good scenario for both, and I can't see any team offering him $12-15M+ a year this offseason.

Also, it would behoove the Cavs to work out an extension now rather than having Hood test the market. His agent should realize how the cap situation looks and it might make sense for them to just lock in on a decent deal now rather than testing restricted free agency only to come up short.

Lopez said he doesn't want a buyout; so, doesn't seem like that's going to happen. Also with Nance out of the rotation, and Frye probably a buyout candidate (GSW?), Lopez will likely get significantly more playing time.
