Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (spoilers)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Not sure why that Johnson quote would worry anyone. The biggest issues with TFA was mapping over Star Wars too much. If they tried to turn episode 8 into another Empire, it'd not only likely pale in comparison (a la Attack of the Clones) but continue the trend of lacking any original vision.

If anything, that's an encouraging sign.

Just saw this movie today and loved it. Although, I can't help but think it's exists to cover for a new hopes biggest flaw with how silly it was that you could fire into a hole and take down the entire thing.

This also inadvertently fucks over the force awakens because what's the excuse for that? Did they have shittier engineers? Was their a rebel spy engineer among them? Do we need a rogue 2 movie just to explain everything that happened between ep 6 and 7?

This is the first film in the series that actually felt like a war film and I loved it for that.

Well, it doesn't exist for that sole purpose...there was a story to tell and they told it...however it did offer a great opportunity to explain away that cheesy plot point from A New Hope. Smart on their part.

I would encourage those saying the prequels are better than TFA to rewatch the prequels.

Phantom Menace was as bad as I remember. I actually really enjoy the end of Attack of the Clones, but the rest of the movie is pretty boring. I remembered Revenge of the Sith being the best of the 3, but wow it is freaking awful.

It was annoying that TFA was a carbon copy remake of A New Hope, but I still enjoyed it much more than the others. Kylo Ren being a whiny bitch was annoying too, but I think that has to do with his character development in still having much to learn.

One thing that did bother me about rogue one was Forrest Whittaker s death scene. I felt like we were just getting to know the guy and instead of just simply leaving with everybody else he elect to just stay there and die.... Because he was tired of running? Wtf. I mean he clearly went through shit just looking at the shape of his body but it was super cheesy to me and felt like a waste.

After rewatching it a few times, I've come to the conclusion that this is Adam Driver's fault primarily. I think, and this is my view, was that he was supposed to be shown as an unhinged bully who uses brute force to cover for his lack of skill. Instead, his 'raging' came across as temper tantrums. It seemed to me like he was supposed to lose his light saber duel with Rey as much due to his own error- underestimating his foe, losing his focus, losing his cool, and then bring exposed for his lack of fundamentals. Driver just didn't sell me there, he's a very good actor but he just came off as emo. I'm now blaming him. Dude needs to find the real Dark Side next movie.

I only saw TFA once, but I definitely like the prequels better. TFA felt like some fake fan-made movie with all of the stupid "lol, we're in a star wars movie" jokes. Also, Finn's character makes absolutely no sense.

That all sounds like bad directing to me.

That and elementary writing....Driver is a great actor and convey just about any emotion. He is one of the few reasons i still tune into Girls and i HATE that Dunham chick with furious anger.

In TFA, he did seem a bit like an angsty teenager with daddy issues but all the main stars were simply written, when you come to think of it.

Rogue One did a much better job at fleshing out its character's motivations with less time to work with. It's a shame we won't see any of them again.

With Jyn Erso, there was a sense of purpose established with her character within her first few scenes. Rey was still bitching about going home 2/3's into the TFA until she was kidnapped by Kylo.

The problem is Adam Driver is not intimidating at all. Maybe it was supposed to be like that? The second he took off his helmet, the character had no intimidation factor and came off as Hayden Christensen 2.0. I'll be interested to see if they fix that in the next movie, if that is part of his natural character progression, but I just don't see how they can make that guy into a satisfying villain. I understand they couldn't cast a scary looking older badass dude, but...I mean, isn't Benicio del Toro supposed to play a villain in the next film? I wish it was a Dark Side Force-user, but I know it won't be. I think that'd be amazing.

I'm just blown away people like the prequels better than TFA, though. I know I said that already but, goddam. :chuckle:

TFA is also part one of a trilogy. Needs to be taken into account when it comes to character development, to be honest.

I think that's the point as both him and Hayden technically didn't cross over to the dark side until the end of TFA and ROTS. From a looks standpoint, neither one is very menacing when compared to Palpatine / Darth Maul.

Agreed but I was hoping that these characters would have more a bit more background development to justify some of their actions in TFA. My hope is that the next installment creates more depth as i'm assuming Rey's backstory will be explored in greater detail. TFA gets a pass for me in that regard as the introduction of Luke will likely flesh out both Kylo and Rey more.

We're comparing Driver's Kylo Ren to Hayden Christensen's Anakin now? Nahhhhh.

Guys, Hayden Christensen has the acting chops of a dung beetle. Kylo Ren was emo, sure, but he was supposed to be that way. He wasn't delivering cheesy love dialogue. As a matter of fact, Kylo Ren was kind of dope... don't @ me...

While I agree this was a weakness of TFA, I think they can make it a strength of Episode 8. He learns how to channel his extremely high, raw force abilities and truly becomes a menacing villain.

Think LeBron in Miami. Kylo just lost to Mavs because he was super arrogant. He now needs to go to Boston and have his own game 6 to unlock everything.
