Series # 33: Indians @ Tiggerz Jewly 27, 28 und 29

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think it’s just best to focus on Jose. I have next to no doubt Lindor is trying to be the highest paid player in baseball. I think Ramirez, based on already inking a reasonable extension, isn’t as worried about making 400 million instead of just a measly quarter of a billion dollars
It's going to take some break throughs in the minors and guys stepping up in replace of Lindor, Bauer, Carrasco and Kluber for the Indians to want to pay Ramirez 25+ million a year past 2023 when this team as we know it is long gone.

Have to consider fan support as well. Lose both Lindor and Jose within 2 years and I'd be surprised if even Sportscoach went to the games

I get we already have shitty attendance, but wew would it be bad after that

I'll actually go to any baseball game, so even if they are bad, ill still go, but you have a point since attendance isn't great now, it will hard to bring in peeps if we don't do a good job of keeping/replacing Lindor and Ramirez.

We shouldn't worry about that right now anyways in a current season chat. We have two very good players who are just hitting their primes. We need to make the most of it now before they leave honestly.

We have a ton of potential in the lower farm system in all honesty. Though most of the guys still need a lot of work, so hopefully they have the right work ethic and luck needed to come through for us once the core we have now is gone. Next year I think we will make a few trades to stay competitive but also move some cap so we can work on keeping some guys long term/build for beyond 2020 in a sense.

True. It's just natural to grow attached to these players and I think all of us would love to see them keep the whole band together. Unfortunately that just isn't reality for a small market baseball team which is why I said I hope we can make it work with one of them at least.

It is quite possible we get Lindor an additional year, but honestly outside of that I am doubting we will any longer than that. He knows his worth and if guys like Harper get big bucks, he will be able to and I don't blame him for that. Hence why I feel MLB needs a minimum and maximum cap to help level out the playing field and keep cost down for fans at the end of the day. I kind of like the NBA bird rights in a way since the team that can offer a player the most is the team that owns the player's bird rights, but I doubt baseball will ever come to that.

Thats just my opinion, but I didn't buy tickets this year since they were even more expensive than last year. I like to buy a bunch of tickets the first week when in the past they were all the same price for every game. This year they already marked them up on promotional nights and being 4+ hours away now I am not going to spend that type of money for a $10 dollar jersey/whatever is being promoted.

Only slightly worse than trading Cy Young pitchers in back to back years.

*sighs* He is having the worst year of his career, I can give you that, but if you look at some of his advanced numbers, he is still in the top 10 in good categories on defense. I mean the league average for RF/9 is 9.07 for a catcher and he is at 10.99. RF/G for the league is at 9.02 and he is at 10.11. I am not sure how you say a catcher is bad, when his advanced numbers still make him a top 10 defensive catcher when he is having a bad year overall. He is Bauer's battery mate and has been for the last year and what has Bauer's ERA been since he was his permanent battery mate, is like under 3. So maybe he is having a bad year, but no way in heck can you not say he isn't Bauer's battery mate. Gomes hasn't caught him since last year and since the permanent distinction, his ERA is under 3 and when he is catching we give up less than 4 runs a game. League average for a catcher is 4.40 so maybe I guess he is bad, when he is in the top tier of catchers.

I’m not sure how you can look at his stats with the playing time he gets. Would he still be in the top 10 if he played full-time?

Defensively yes, I have no doubt he would be. He has always had a 10+ range factor in his whole career. Now would hit bat be better as well? Actually it probably would be since he would be hitting everyday. Sometimes its a little easier to hit if you aren't only playing a couple times a week. Will he ever be a very productive bat? in my opinion, he wouldn't be, but he has always had a positive war (until this season) without having a good bat. I mean in 2100 innings at catcher his fielding percentage is at .993 (Average, .994) while his RF/9 is 10.35 (average 8.61) and RF/G is 9.09 (average is 8.53) so I mean if that doesn't say what type of fielder he is I don't know what would. I feel he is likely the best backup catcher in the pros when it comes to defense since if he did play everyday he would be a top 10 defensive catcher in the big league based off of his numbers. Gomes happens to be 1st in RF/G and 2nd in RF/9 for starting catchers in his career, so I mean we have the nicest defensive combo in the pros when it comes to our two catchers.

Would we all like Perez to hit better? Sure, but we will find an upgrade that can handle the pitching staff at the same level? Absolutely not! So take it as this, Gomes and Perez are second to none defensively of any tandem of catchers in the pros and our pitchers want to pitch to these guys and fully respect them. Cut/release one of these guys and you will have to deal with starting pitchers who now just lost respect for the FO and the organization. I mean I am sure they would get over it, but they may not care to pitch to whoever replaces them.

But he doesn’t.

So who cares. That’s called utilizing your player correctly.

Projecting what he would do, simply because you’re wrong, is worthless.

Why is any of this relevant?

To date in his career, Roberto Perez is an excellent defensive catcher, period. There's no reason to think that will stop.

He can't hit, so he's not an everyday player. He's on a team with plenty of guys who can hit, and he's the catcher for one of the best starters in baseball this season. I really don't see a big problem.

What would his defense be if he played second base instead of catcher?

See, told you.
