Stand-up Comedy

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
We could derail this pretty easily but I need to make sure we are referring to the same thing: All men are created equal but Indians, women and n can't vote, and Clinton was full of shit but at least he was honest about it?

While you're correct in saying it's depressing as fuck, at least he was refreshing and empowering in his presentation of truths. To me he'll always be a pioneer when it comes to criticizing religion.
At least for the women bit, it had to do with the draft.

Men voted bc they could be enlisted.

Both of Chappelles specials were good but the thing about Key and Peele steeling his show kind of rubbed me wrong. Like hes not the first person to do a sketch show. I don't really get why he would throw them under the bus. Is he jealous of their success?

I don't think Chappelle dislikes those guys, but it really is funny how they just kind of took over for Dave's show. Same concept, same network, and the same racial angle on a lot of jokes. Same level of success even.

I suppose any good idea is worth doing again, especially if the predecessor doesn't want to do it anymore. But it would be a little weird to be the face of a show, known for its groundbreaking racial humor, think you've created something of value and importance that will resonate with generations to come, be proud of everything you've just accomplished, walk away from it at the peak of its success, and see someone come right in, and fill your shoes.

Or at least maybe that's how Dave feels. I loved both shows, and certainly don't fault Key and Peele for continuing in Dave's footsteps.

@gourimoko is a big Key and Peele fan, I bet. Big fan of "cooning."

Probably is even ok with me using the word cooning to describe it.

I don't think Dave was taking shots at them. It felt more like he was taking shots at Comedy Central for filling the "edgy, urban sketch comedy" void he left behind after some failed attempts at launching new shows.

I can just picture Comedy Central execs thinking, "So we can do similarly controversial sketches with not one but two funny black guys? Sign us up!"

Since when are Key and Peele controversial? They use Chappelle's format but I feel like their humor is miles away, much more traditional in sketch structure and improv/duo oriented humor rather than premises that could work in a standup set. As funny as they are I've never seen something they've done and felt like they were pushing the envelope.

I haven't watched the new Chappelle specials yet, but I saw his interview on CBS This Morning. He stated that he's a fan of their show but it irked him to see "created by Key and Peele" at the end because he feels like he created what they did. Seems like a bit of ego prodding out if I'm being honest. Chappelle didn't really revolutionize sketch comedy because of his show's format, it was a hit because his writing and performance was off the charts. Just seems like a strange criticism from him. Keeping in mind this dude is highly intelligent and deep as fuck.

As for Gaffigan, I always enjoy his stuff. I adored Beyond the Pale when it came out but I must admit I think I enjoyed him a lot more when I was younger. It's nice to have different paces though, some guys are really intense but he usually just talks about food for an hour. There are very few standups that I hate. Usually if I don't like them or care for their work, I still recognize what they manage to do on stage with big crowds. Never really dug anything Gabriel Iglaseas (sp?) has done but he's a hell of a performer, for instance. Jim Norton might be my least favorite "successful" standup.

I also really enjoy Pete Holmes and his podcast.

Same level of success even.
Is it? Chappelle Show was amazing. Watched it all the time, I'm not a big K&P fan at all, doesn't hold my attention.

I knew somebody would refute this.

Fact is, it would be hard to fairly compare the two in success because Key and Peele built most of their success and following off of individual sketches that got posted on YouTube, whereas Chappelle's Show success and following was probably more measured by eventual DVD sales and Tv ratings at the time.

My point is, both shows were hugely successful.

And both launched big careers. Jordan Peele's 'Get Out' is getting major praise and Keegan Michael-Key is in everything these days. Before their show I only knew them as those guys who were on MadTV.

I am a huge Chappelle show fan, but Neal Brennan has as much to do with its success as Chappelle himself and not sure I have seen an interview where Chappelle acknowledges this.

Brennan and Chappelle wrote half baked together also, I dont think they have worked together since the show though.

Just saying if Chappelle is being arrogant, probably he should recognize who helped him too.

Wasn't trying to refute anymore, more questioning if it was, in fact, successful. Was saying the few times I watched it, it didn't do anything for me, and I'd never really gotten any word of mouth on it, so it was news to me it was that successful. Not doubting you, it was just surprising to me. :)

Anyone think peele (? Or key..?) is going to have a hard time following up Get Out?

We gonna talk about chappelles new stuff?

His writing is excellent.. But his delivery is just remarkable.

If i told his jokes, it just wouldnt be funny.
