I have no problem paying for content that is actually important to me and that I will actually use. People had magazine and newspaper subscriptions for years, I have Spotify / Netflix / Audible subscriptions, etc.

If Lloyd is covering and their stuff is legit, I'd consider it for sure. So the "nobody will pay for this" is probably not entirely accurate.

The digital content subscriptions you listed is completely different than journalism. Nobody is going to pay $5 a month for Lloyd's hot takes.

Ok, I guess we will see :dunno:

I mean I just said I'd consider it once I see their actual offering. So... I suppose "nobody" isn't entirely accurate.

To be fair, Lloyd won’t be the only content on the site, and the Final Thoughts article is by far the best regular feature out of anything any of the beat writers do...you usually get “behind the scenes” tidbits there you won’t find or hear anywhere else.

$50 a year doesn’t seem bad to me. That’s cheaper than buying a new videogame and you can fit a ton of premium content in that timespan. I’d definitely consider signing up for a subscription.

I'll also be curious to see who they select to cover the Indians and Browns.

Would you do it if Lloyd's coverage is no different than what it was with the ABJ? I'm having trouble seeing how joining this new start up is going to give him some sort of additional insight that he didn't have before.

Being behind an exclusivity wall will probably allow him to share more details about stuff he talks to players about than he does currently. He certainly has a treasure trove of info and conversations with people that have never before been published in the time he’s been with the ABJ...it’s a big reason that Cavs 2010-2016 book he’s writing is a big draw...people will find out previously “off the record” stuff they never knew before.

I love those final thoughts articles. They're the first post-game content I anticipate to read. Marla did her own final thoughts when she filled in for Lloyd on ABJ. I wonder if she'll continue or will Lloyd take the concept with him.

Yeah probably. I literally only read Lloyd and McMenamin, but I haven't had to pay for it up this point. If McMenamin ended up behind the Insider pay wall, I'd give it a thought.

If they picked up Vardon instead of Lloyd, probably wouldn't pay. But for Lloyd and his Final Thoughts I would. Final Thoughts and listening to Hey Windy are my only Must Read / Must Listen Cavs content.

    Me too.

Lloyd said he’ll continue Final Thoughts at the Athletic and they’ll be “bigger and better than ever”.

I hope Marla doesn’t try to continue with it as well at the ABJ...whenever she filled in and tried to do Final Thoughts of her own, the points were never all that interesting or insightful. Chris Fedor tried to do his own copycat thing at Cleveland.com with his “5 Observations” after every game, but those haven’t been good either.

    You can’t beat the original.

A similar model worked well in Pittsburgh when a few of the big name sports writers left the newspaper a couple years ago. A lot of people signed up and they picked up a good number of writers. I wouldn't say paid journalism is dead - just a new model.
