The Athletic

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
If only there was a way to pay per article... I don't really think I'd be all that interested in Browns/Indians/OSU articles. I want the Cavs stuff...

Why should you pay money for The Athletic, you ask?

Well there you go.

If this is an actual media company with developers, a designer, senior level MGT, reporters, etc.....just baseline level, you're talking a million in overhead IMO.

Technology talent is so scare that you aren't attracting people based on an idea alone. You have to pay them competitive salaries or they are just going elsewhere.

The big cost savings can be had if the CEO / Founders have technical skill that they can leverage, where they take well below market salaries, to get the company runnng.

If this endeavor is journalists who need to outsource and maintain a publishing platform at even a basic level, the costs are not cheap.

Unless they have significant investment and an actual business plan, this will fail miserably. And to me, $5 a month is a crazy price point when considering an App like texture let's me read every magazine known to man for $10 a month.
It may fail, but another option in addition to offering salaries is partial ownership in the company. For key members of their team I am sure they are doing that to make it more attractive.

I signed up for a year long subscription to the Athletic soon after the site opened, just so I could support you in this endeavor, Jason @Lloyd . Got 5 of my friends who used to read your work in the ABJ (but have since moved to other parts of the country) to sign up for a paid subscription as well.

So with that said, I want my free t-shirt!

(Or a copy of your upcoming book, *cough* *cough*)

:chuckle:

They seem to be putting together a pretty good team. May to review their talent again once everything is finalized and reconsider.

Now that we have been up and running for about two months, just curious what everyone thinks of The Athletic. Who subscribed? Who still thinks I'm an idiot for doing this? What do you like? What do you hate? Be honest.

I know RCF is Cavs-centric, but I've been really happy with the Browns and Indians stuff we've produced, too. TJ has a deep understanding of baseball, while Travis Sawchik is a star. Some of his stuff on Lindor has been next level.

I think Zac has been great on the Browns and Dustin Fox will be terrific doing videos. The plan is to add a second Browns writer before the start of training camp and we're beginning the process of adding Columbus-based staff, too.

Anyway, just thought I'd check in and see what everyone thinks, where we're nailing it and where we can improve. And as an FYI, finishing the rewrites on the book this week. Due out in the fall. You can pre-order here.

To all those who have subscribed to The Athletic, thank you. To those who haven't, we're coming for you. Thanks.
