The Dog Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
How cold can it get outside before a dog will like freeze to death if she sleeps out there? My mom is evil and refuses to let ours even come in the garage and I'm really worried about her.

Tell her it is the fucking law to ensure they are warm when it gets this cold.

Tell her as her King that I command her to obey.

That shit
shit isn't right man.
I don't understand why people have pets if they're just going to do shit like that.

Haha. She has a doghouse with a bunch of blankets inside of it, and a blanket draped over the outside of it, plus like 10 cats that sleep inside of it with her, but I'm still worried :( It's supposed to be below zero tonight.

Black lab, 125 pounds

I doubt a full grown lab that's used to living outdoors would freeze to death in Indiana (assuming he/she is safe from the wind). That said, agree that the dog would be a lot happier indoors or at least in the garage.

Not only is it the humane thing to do, but tell her that from an evolutionary perspective that dogs, unlike many cats, don't handle the cold well, unless they are a certain breed, because their domestication specifically designed them to sleep indoors with humans.

The whole point is that they are supposed to be inside and share heat with us.

Hide that poor dog in your room bro

I never knew that. Thanks man, I'll use that to try and reason with her about it.

I would try to but I'm not there tonight. I think she'll be okay since she's managed when it's been really cold the past few nights, but I still feel terrible. I wish I could just take her to live with me.

Can't really even understand why people would get a dog and have it live outdoors. Dogs are pack animals. They have a mental need to live with their pack, which is typically either solely their human family or perhaps their human(s) and another dog. They just aren't meant to be outdoor creatures, at least within the context of a pet dog that has a human pack like yours clearly does.

Cats can be functional outdoor pets because they are solitary animals that evolved from animals that hunt and (generally speaking) live alone.

Anyway, enjoy some more puppy pics!

Plus cat fur is a much better insulator against the cold than most dogs have.

Yeah, a lab would be better off than, say, my boxer Loki would have been, but not nearly as well off in the cold as my Shepherd or other spitz type dogs like huskies.

My mutt, which is probably some kind of hound, runs with me in these sub-zero PA wind chills. She flips her shit for 10k. Loves it.

I had icicles on my eyebrows and my eyes were freezing together the last couple days when the tears would run down. :chuckle:

I’ve tried a couple different types of coverings for her to wear and she literally won’t move before we start running. She digs her heels in until I take them off and then she’ll get going.

I stopped bothering with them. I mean...I’m comfortable running with some bare skin out once I get going, so I suppose she’s probably ok. Who the fuck knows. Is there any need for this or should I just let her go? I’ve read on some sites dogs should be covered up and then on others it’s unnecessary. She shows zero signs of discomfort and in fact, she seeks out the snow and starts plowing through it and playing in it.

She has wiry hair. Not thick fur. We have run down into the negatives.

Tell your mom she can get fined for animal cruelty.

What’s her problem here exactly? Why does she have the dog?

If the dog doesn't show any real signs of discomfort and is clearly enjoying herself, you're probably fine. I think a dog you're actively running with and then taking back inside is a different situation from just leaving a dog outside to sleep in the cold in the same way that, as you said, you can suffer some bare skin while you're running that would more than likely bother you if you were just standing around.

Honestly I don't really know what her problem is.. I guess she doesn't want the dog to "mess up the house", but she wouldn't even let her stay in the garage. She just says things like "oh she'll be ok, she has a doghouse", and "other animals are outside in the cold and they're fine". My dad would be okay with letting the dog come into the house, but tbh he's kind of a pussy and backs down from her.

My sister got the dog a few years ago but then she went off to college and now they take care of it. I really didn't expect them to be this cruel to it.
