i think ppl tolerate it because it only affects the 2 most hated teams in the league

No. People are against changing it because there's little sense in doing so. If there's a facet of the game you struggle with, you work on it. If you're a bad defender, work on it. Not a good 3 point shooter as a wing player? Work on it. If you can't improve, then oh well.

A bad defender is brought out of the game down the stretch, if a team needs defense on the floor, and/or teams are exploiting him on that end.

A bad shooter isn't in there when offense is needed and/or when the defense is sagging off of them and packing the paint.

A bad rebounder isn't in there if a team is getting killed on the glass & teams are taking advantage.

Yet we should change the game to benefit those who can't hit a standstill shot with nobody around?

I get the feeling that even if they remove that aspect of the game, teams will adapt and use another effective strategy *insert "Captain Obvious" quip*

Let’s say you have a gumball machine with a lever on it. When you pull the lever, there is a 49% chance of getting 2 gumballs, a 42% chance of getting 1 gumball, and 9% chance of not getting any gumball at all. You can only pull the lever once. How many gumballs are you most likely gonna walk away with?
Not two

If we can pull the lever an infinite amount of times, you are right that it is 1% more likely we don’t get 2 gumballs than the alternative. But we are only looking at one isolated instance and seeing what the most likely occurrence is.

Lol yes, we are, and the most likely occurrence would not be two, it'd either be 1 or 0

A far better rule would be mandating all players shooting below 60% to have to utilize the Dave Barry method until they get their average back up:

Silver is trying to kill the NBA with this bullshit.

Keep it as is.

If professional basketball players can't learn to shoot FT, than take the consequences as a player and team. It's just part of the dynamics.
Imagine what Shaq would do if hack-a-shaq was illegal

I don't know how else to explain it, man. In a sample size of 1, there can only be one outcome. Not "or" anything where you add two outcomes together. If you pull the lever once, you are more likely to get 2 gumballs than either one gumball or zero gumballs. Because only one of those 3 things can happen. Like i've said several times, this doesn't hold true in a repeated/larger sample...but because of sample error, in any one random trip to the machine you absolutely would expect to receive 2 gumballs than one of the other alternatives.

This is relevant to the basketball example because from a strategic standpoint, you're not interested in what would happen if a player was fouled repeatedly, you're interested in the most likely outcome of one particular trip. In one single trip to the line you are more likely to end up with 2 points than either 1 point or zero points, otherwise the percentages wouldn't be what they are.

I believe that you shouldn't be in the NBA if you cannot shoot FTs.

I also believe watching horrible FT shooters continually shooting FTs is bad for the league.

Someone needs to provide a reasonable rule change that won't impact the game significantly. Because the repeatedly offered answer of making every off ball foul the equivalent of a tech is insane (1 shot and the ball). Officials are already wary of calling off ball stuff.

That's just too punitive. The bigger problem is that the fouls are still going to come. You are just going to see defenses get a LOT more physical on Drummond screens, etc moving forward rather than have guys jumping harmlessly on guys backs, it is going to be done in another fashion altogether.

This is why I feel like Drummond and Deandre and others are not arguing in good faith for a rule change. they should have tried everything possible to improve. They are just worried about not looking cool. Rick Barry is dying to turn one of these guys into a really good granny bucket shooter.

Dave?

Sure, let's change the rules. Also, let's change the rules to eliminate the regular season and immediately award the title to Golden State because "regular seasons are boring and the interrupt the flow".

I agree with everything said above and believe the rules should remain as they are... however, i think people are missing the point. The NBA will make the change not because they want to help bad players or coaches, but because it's boring basketball and they don't want those terrible lulls to tarnish its image. I think that's the extent of it.

If you won't or can't swallow your pride and 'Barry' the attempts you aren't committed to your team winning and shouldn't be on the floor. It makes me crazy to even think about changing a rules to satisfy egos. If we are talking about a structural problem in the game needing to be corrected thats one thing- but this is about effort ability and ego.
I am dyslexic, I could not have failed algebra more completely- despite putting in hours of extra time and tutoring all through HS. How gross would it be to change the schools math requirements just to help me feel better about myself? Now imagine I'm not actually trying very hard- not taking the extra classes- but the school still wants to change the requirement- how does that make anyone smarter (or better at basketball)?

Drummond and Jordan have severe athleticisn advantages and if they could shoot free throws at even 60% they would be super dominant. There is no need to give them.another advantage that isn't based on skill or work. They're already 7 feet tall and can jump super high.

Plus, they already adjusted things so you cant do it in the last 2 minutes of a game. Which is fine. Teams.still avoid playing those guys in the last 2 minutes because if they get a rebound or touch the ball for any reason they're a liability at the line.

It's pretty.pathetic that the league is even considering a change to the rule. I think it is perfect as is.
