Jimmy Haslam 'loved' trucking rip-off scheme according to a secretly recorded conversation

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- A former truck stop company executive boasted in a secretly recorded conversation that Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam "loved it" when the sales team ripped off customers.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports the jury in the federal fraud trial of former Pilot Flying J executives and sales representatives heard a recording of former vice president John "Stick" Freeman saying Haslam was aware of the scheme to deprive trucking customers of the diesel discounts they had negotiated.

In Freeman's words: "He knew -- absolutely."

Pilot, which is controlled by the Haslam family, issued a statement reiterating that "Jimmy Haslam was not aware of any wrongdoing."

Haslam hasn't been charged in the investigation that has resulted in 14 guilty pleas among former Pilot employees. Freeman and three others are on trial.

If he didn’t know that’s almost as bad as if he did know

But it’s less slimy and morally disgusting and more this guy truly is a moron

This is all damning, but without anyone stepping forward and putting JH3 in the room during these discussions, they're just damning words. I think it's safe to assume he knew, but like any wise business owner, he insulated himself from being tangibly aware (to this point, at least).

Eh....

The jury heard all the evidence, the prosecutors heard it, and Haslam wasn't charged.

This is the kind of thing where the exact details and words used are everything. It is entirely possible that (for example) that Haslam was told of ways to recover discounts that had not been been properly earned, but not facts regarding fraudulent or illegal denials of discounts that should have been granted.

This kind of conclusory claim slipping out so long after the trial just isn't reliable.

He wasn’t charged because he’s a fucking billionaire with his brother serving as Governor in the state of Tennessee. Do you believe this is an honest and impartial investigation?

Anything to get this fuck out of owning our team

It's quite possible that Buffet/Berkshire were bought in to salvage the reputation of the company going forward so it can thrive in the future(almost a midas touch level guiding hand) and that Dee has been set up to own/run the team.

If it's done that way, whether he goes to jail or not, he can be removed from operating control of both his company and team, but neither can be taken away from the family as a whole for his actions.

Wow. Did you order the trial transcript, review it, and review all the relevant documents before reaching that conclusion?Or did you just make that up based on your own cynical bias that rich white guys are always guilty?

Do you believe this is an honest and impartial investigation?

I see no reason to assume the contrary. Do you have a particular reason to believe that Bill Killian was particularly fond of Governor Haslam or his family?

They had an indictment all set to go but the Prosecuter's office sent over unsigned documents to the FBI and the FBI didn't realize it when they submitted it to the judge. The court had to void the indictment altogether.

Over the past 2+ years Dee Haslam has played a more active role in the business. I don't think that is by accident or her forcing her way into the discussions. I think Dee is the back up should Jimmy fall into legal issues and they are getting her much more involved with Day to Day activities.

I don't know about the botched indictment paperwork but I would not surprised 1 bit if news breaks out of nowhere that Jimmy is again in legal trouble.

So you're saying Sashi Brown could find a gig in a federal prosecutor's office if this football thing doesn't work out?

And I'm a Chinese Jet Pilot.
