The mental health thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I’m another one that’s part of the club! Like you said, grade school/middle school kind of sucked, but I was fortunate to have a somewhat mild case. It was worse when I was younger, but it’s all but gone away now. It only really comes out when I’m really excited about something, and I just unload a stream of ticks. I try to hold it in until I’m alone though.
That's usually what I try to do too. Every now and then it'll be kinda bad but it's pretty random. I'm glad I don't blurt out swear words like the guy from YouTube lol.

What do you guys do? What’s the sensation like when you have a tic? Is it like an overwhelming sensation to do whatever the thing is?

I have to scrunch my noise at the right.. angle and intensity or it doesn't feel right. It's gotta be fine just the right way. So I'll keep trying.. And it's getting harder and harder to get it right.

Even when fully focused on restraining yourself from engaging in it.. It's just like, no man, gotta do it

I've had a variety of different ones. One had to do with blinking. It'll last for a little while and then go away, and then a different one comes around. It's not the same thing constantly for me. But yeah it's like a sensation to where you have to do the tic "right" and until you do you just can't relax and you feel uneasy. I have control over when I do it so it's not involuntary or anything

Did any of you go to a shrink or psychologist for any therapies?

I have read that CBT can be effective in some cases.

Mine thinks it's just the Adderall he's given me that I'm not taking. I can't exactly tell him what's up

Adderall doesn't really do that...

Who is this guy? Does he know you have Tourettes?

Now I’m fixated on scrunching my nose at just the right angle.

He thinks it's from a stimulant. I did the research myself awhile ago and I think it's a consequence of dopaminergic excess.. That lends to the theories of both unusual stressors and stimulants

My bucket shop psychologist is meeting with me next Thursday at a fucking Dennys because he's "in between offices"

So much for confidentiality...

I've had a few throughout the years. I was initially diagnosed when I was 5-6ish because I had long hair at the time, and would flip my head to get it out of my face. So my parents cut my hair, but I kept flipping my head which made them suspicious.

There are some other meaningless tics, the most current and long running one being that I just look left and right with my eyes really fast. If I get the urge to do it, I tend to just wait for the person I'm talking to to look away real quick, then I'll do it. Even if they catch me, they always just assume I have something in my eye. That's pretty much gone away though, like I said before I only do it when I'm really excited about something, or really nervous.

The sensation is weird, and hard to describe. It's like this thing building up in you, and at first it's sort of manageable, you can hold it in. But then it just keeps building to the point where you have to do the tic to get the release. And like others stated, if you don't do it right you just keep doing it until it feels right.

Tourette's is linked closely with OCD, so there's also a few OCD tendencies I have, like flicking a light on and off a few times. That's somewhat seldom, but every once in a while I get the urge to do it. I've become pretty good at just putting that out of my mind though, and saying fuck it nothing will happen if I don't do this. But every once in a while, the urge wins out.

Man, people are fascinating. Thanks for sharing your situations dudes.

I feel like if we were still hunting lions and being regularly ambushed by gorillas...potentially running out of food every winter...and that was the shit we had to worry about we probably wouldn’t be dealing with a lot of the mental bullshit we do. :chuckle:

Or maybe it would more easily be pushed to the backburner. Could be wrong.

Or we'd be dead because we'd be too worried about how a certain rock is placed to realize that we're being eaten by a lion.

Started a new job in December, had a few good weeks and then the holidays came... I haven't been to work since the holiday break ended. So many emotions are piled up at once and I am still not over my parents' deaths. One year anniversary of my moms passing is coming soon too...

Question: Can I take a leave of absence and seek some help? Or is that going to end my employment? Does anybody understand the procedures?

Thanks!

Any opinions on whether to see a male or female therapist? I need a new one
