The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread (includes spoilers)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Fuck. Season Two was so good.

It was. Really, the first three seasons were all fucking great simply because they mostly stuck to the books. Five was by far the worst because it strayed too far.

They kind of miffed the Battle of the Blackwater, but I can forgive it because it was a budget issue. If that battle had been this season, they probably would have done it more justice.

That episode was amazing in any event.

"But Your Grace... the fire... their archers... hundreds will die..."

"Thousands."

They did a great job, no doubt. I thought they hired the perfect director (same guy who did the battle at the Wall, which was also awesome). The book is just so much better there, and later battles in the show are too.

Yeah, the episode makes Stannis look stupid for not knowing a giant army was moving on him. The book explains why through Tyrion's use of the Mountain Clansmen as an anti-screen line.

The show relies too much on characters behaving stupidly to meet end-states that occur organically in the books. One could excuse it as the constraint of time, but they spend so much time doing nothing so... meh.

Yup. I went over Robb's decisions leading up to the Red Wedding in the TV thread, and in the show it was just him being a dumb, horny kid. In the books, his bad decisions were at least somewhat excusable given the circumstances. He was wounded and just found out his two kid brothers were murdered, which led to him sleeping with a girl. His honor (which, as Ned Stark's son, is a key attribute) then led him to marrying her.

I really don't even understand why they left the part about him finding out about his brothers out of the show. They still "died" on the show, but Theon for whatever reason never told anyone, which didn't make a lot of sense seeing as he killed them to send a message.

To me, the most disappointing part of the entire show is Stannis' end. This guy is the best general in all of Westeros and he just wanders up to Winterfell with like 20 dudes in broad daylight. No scouts, no strategy, nothing. Beyond lazy writing.

After burning his daughter and his wife killing herself, followed by weeks in the bitter cold. I always looked at it as him going mad and losing touch with reality.

There was something off about the way his death was shot though. I'm honestly still not completely convinced he's dead.

Yeah it was really strange to cut out right before you see him get offed.....

That's so Un-GoT like that it really does lead you to believe he's alive still.

I think he was confirmed dead by the writers and HBO. Also, they killed Blackfish off-screen in season 6. I didn't necessarily like it either, but I think the director preferred the finality of it to be remembered as Brienne and her sword, rather than the image of a dead Stannis.

The only excuse they have is GRRM's description of Stannis as being too rigid, and thus subject to being broken. Stubbornness was a virtue when defending a fortress, less so moving an army in winter. Doesn't seem like the kind of guy who ever questions himself or modify plans. And he was lacking his best advisor, Davis.

But they still did make him look inept.

Although it is strange that he hasn't shown up yet, even after Jon won and all the other lords had time to travel to Winterfell.

And he wouldn't really serve a plot point any more. His entire army - all the men remaining to House Baratheon - were massacred. He has no crown, no power base, and no reason for anyone to consider him anything more than an irrelevance.

ETA:. There is the fact that Melisande left, and if anyone is likely to run into him, it will be her.

I've harbored the same feelings regarding Stannis. His death was shitty and never even shown on screen. That, coupled with Brianne's character and her penchant for forgiveness (specifically at that time) have always had me believing he's still around.

The show has gone a ways since then and he hasn't returned though. Maybe they went back on a decision they had previously made.

I'm pretty sure someone involved with the show also said sandor clegane was dead, too. See if I can find that.

Also, Waldeau let slip a little something that made it sound like either he or Cersei were going to have a new suitor soon. I'm going with Euron and Cersei.

The Hound clearly had a purpose going forward. As Q-Tip said, Stannis has no purpose.

In regards to Cersei, gotta believe that Euron is the only relevant alliance left for her to make before it all becomes irrelevant and the Walkers invade Westeros.

I still don't know where the drama is going to come from when you pit Daenerys/ dragons/Unsullied/Dothraki/Tyrion/Varys/Martells/Tyrells/some Greyjoys/The North (most likely) vs. the Lannisters and Euron. I wouldn't pay for that Pay per view.

Agreed. I've been thinking the same thing since I started watching the show. There's no way Daenerys doesn't come out on top.

That said, I"m pretty sure the drama is going to become how Westeros manages to survive an entire assault from the White Walkers.
