The Trump Administration (just Trump) Thread

A coworker today was talking about the eminem song. He's actually a slightly older than middle aged Japanese guy. I told him I thought it was egregious on ems part to call Trump a racist. He went on to say that black guys use to call him a chinamen growing up which really bothered him as a Japanese dude. Every race has it's racist people, but it only seems like white people are condemned for it when all people should be.

Nobody is disagreeing here that anyone can be a racist asshole.

I don't see how it's egregious to call Trump a racist. It's kind of insane that you, and several other posters, won't recognize Trump's racism but jump on EVERY opportunity to call any minority person a racist to suit this idea that it's all the same and we should get over it. You're complaining that only white people get called out while ignoring an obvious white racist. Why do you think white racism is called out so much? Because white people have power in this country and many white people refuse to acknowledge racism.

Systemic oppression in this country has largely gone one direction, supporting white supremacy. That doesn't mean that every individual white person is bad/racist or that every individual minority is good/not racist. That's never been a stated position here.

Who has the highest IQ in here? I scored 100%.

Doubt anyone beat me.

Got a B+ the first time (87), but I have a strong work ethic so I did bettet on the second one.

Not on here, people in general.

Take Ellen for example. I doubt she was loving Eminem when he was talking about breaking tables over gay people's backs.

Someone should show her his lyrics on his views of gay people.

Just throwing this out there, but do you think that white racism gets talked about more than black racism because African Americans only make up 12% of the population?

Here me out.

I have a Spanish name and I look absolutely white. I went to a predominantly African American school, so trust me I get that they can be racist. So can anyone, and I don't think anyone on this site has argued that only white people can be racist because that's stupid. Anyone who says that is stupid.

The problem that I think people are ignoring is that since White Americans make up such a larger amount of the population than African Americans that, assuming the percentage of racism is similar across both races, racist White Americans have the ability to significantly negatively affect others simply because of they have more power based on numbers.

Even assuming (for example) only 30% of White Americans hold SOME racist thoughts, that is still a larger group of people than the ENTIRE African American population.

78% of cops are white for example. Most of our interactions are going to be with White cops, and most cops have superiors who are White, and most internal investigations are done by White people investigating White cops. So a small population of racist white cops are able to have a much larger negative effect on the White population than racist black cops.

Now extend that logic towards government, corporate America, and other areas where White Americans are the majority. It's just much easier for White Americans to negatively affect minorities on every single level of American society than it is for minorities in this country to negatively hold back White Americans from succeeding.

Nah.

This thought process is only applicable when you have to extrapolate to per capita murder and violent crime statistics.

I was jumped as a teenager for being white in a predominantly black part of town I moved to.

I too learned about racism the hard way.

Had a similar experience. You can either carry that shit with you, or just figure they were generic assholes, which come in all colors.

I think there is some logic to that, but one mitigating factor is that a high percentage of black Americans live in black majority urban areas, led by elected black politicians. Going to majority black schools, and sometimes with a majority of black teachers.

So in terms of daily life, they are the majority.

The bolded isn't really true, though... No matter where you live, you never feel as though you are the majority. I mean, you could argue they might be the majority in their neighborhood, but, that isn't saying much at all. They're aware of the larger, city, county, state, country and world around them.. They interact with this world on a daily basis in a multitude of ways.

Anti-racism is definitely a central component to my worldview because racism was my first negative societal experience growing up; and that's true for many minorities.

So it's hard to imagine not dwelling on it when it's such a serious and impactful aspect of life as a minority in America.

I do not believe it impacts lives on a daily basis nearly as much as you appear to be suggesting. Nor do I believe that race relations deteriorating as the internet has become more ubiquitous is just a coincidence.

People internalize shit they see, hear, and read on the internet, and it needs a mindset of exaggeration and resentment.

I do not believe it impacts lives on a daily basis nearly as much as you appear to be suggesting.

And that difference of belief and perception is part of the problem.

So.. it's fairly obvious these two groups aren't sharing the same perceptions, and aren't observing the same things, right? I mean, these values are nearly static across the board since 1979.

Just looking at a narrow band of years for the differences in perception regarding racism it's obvious there exists a wide difference of opinion here:

Nor do I believe that race relations deteriorating as the internet has become more ubiquitous is just a coincidence.

Can you elaborate on this for me? I'm not sure I'd agree with the premise itself as I think race relations have largely improved since the early/mid-1990s going into 2008. I think race relations deteriorated massively from 2012-2016, but I don't think there's either a correlation (I could be wrong here) or a causative association between the rise of the internet and a decline in relations

People internalize shit they see, hear, and read on the internet, and it needs a mindset of exaggeration and resentment.

I think the above graph demonstrates your point here isn't actually accurate with respect to Black views on race and opportunity, etc. Believe me when I say, from the 1960s to the early 1990s, Black people were FAR more focused on racial issues, and were a much more unified and powerful voice. If anything, the focus of Blacks on race has diminished over time.

Now with all of that said, if we look at the last poll here, 82% of Black Americans and 56% of White Americans say racism is widespread. My question to you is; are more than 4 out of 5 Black people simply exaggerating their experience?

People internalize shit they see, hear, and read on the internet, and it needs a mindset of exaggeration and resentment.

Consider this recent survey, which found that...

16% of Americans think interracial marriage should be illegal (and another 18% offered no opinion)

8% of Americans support the white nationalist movement (and another 28% offered no opinion)

So it's not an exaggeration to say that there are literally tens of millions of people in this country who hold racist views. It's not just a drop in the bucket. Is it really that hard to believe that those tens of millions of people sometimes act on their racist beliefs?
