The "What are you playing now?" Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I may get one eventually, but I've soured on buying consoles at launch. I don't even own a console right now, to be honest. Well, a PS3, but I haven't turned it on in years. I sold my 360, Xbone, and PS4 because I just wasn't playing them enough to justify holding on to them.

But the Switch intrigues me both for Breath of the Wild and because I think the concept of it is cool. As someone who likes to travel, it'd be fun to be able to bring it with me easily on planes and such. I can imagine how useful it would have been on my trip to Europe last summer, as we spent a lot of time on planes and trains getting from country to country. We settled for a bluetooth speaker and stand-up comedy to entertain us on the trains, but I'd think the Switch would be a cool distraction too.

The Switch makes a lot of sense for a gamer in your situation, since you can play most of the AAA stuff (basically anything that isn't a PlayStation exclusive) on your PC. With the Switch you get Nintendo exclusives and indie stuff at home or on the go, plus a great couch co-op machine for parties.

Tried (or re-started in one case) a couple of games from my vast Steam backlog today. Picked two that are on the shorter side of things so I can start adding games to my "Beaten" category. Anyway...

Shovel Knight - A Mega Man-esque retro-style platformer action game. While it's clearly inspired by Mega Man, it's nowhere near as frustrating as some of those games tended to be. It's not easy, and parts are quite difficult, but it's more fun because it's not constantly pissing you off. I do think Shovel Knight himself controls a bit stiffly, causing me to not always land where I want to on jumps, but it's more of a minor annoyance than a huge problem. I beat the first three bosses of the Order of No Quarter (the cabal of bad guys in the game), along with a few smaller levels and a few mini-bosses that appear on the world map (which basically looks and functions like the Mario 3 world map) thus far and am enjoying it. This was the game I started back when I bought it, only to get caught up by other games (I think...I remember starting it but not why I stopped). It has RPG elements as well, although doesn't every game these days? The game also has (FREE!) DLC that apparently adds an entire new campaign to the game where you play as one of the bad guys. There's a second campaign coming as well, although I believe right now it's a Nintendo timed exclusive.

Valiant Hearts - I don't even remember buying this game, but it's been sitting installed in my Steam library for ages now. And it's...a very pleasant surprise. It's an adventure game about the first World War, and while I've only played it for about an hour, it covers some pretty weighty material. You play as at least two characters (probably more, but I've only played as two so far), and the game does a great job of making the war feel horrifying despite the cutesy art style. There's a segment early in the game where you have to rush across a field as bombs and machine guns go off (they can and probably will kill you at least once) and it was fantastic because you literally cannot fight back. You just have to try to survive. The current level I am on finds me in a German POW camp. The game is largely puzzle-solving, as is typical of adventure games, but the puzzles have generally been pretty interesting and fun after the tutorial level.

Holy shit, man. Valiant Hearts had quite possibly the most incredible ending of any game I've ever played. Definitely up there with Metal Gear Solid 3.

So.... Many.... Andromeda.... Videos....

Must fight the urge to watch. Won't spoil any of this for myself.

So, this happened.

That looks incredible. Even as an alpha build. I assume the graphics will be much improved.

I am sorry but I have to say this. Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild is my Game Of the Year. Nier Automata could come close but no way. Playing on the go and at home and it loses no function other than resolution. The game is that good, such a great start to the year for gaming. So much yet to come so much to buy. I have five games I am playing at once and for the first time in a while I do not want to buy anymore games. I got what I wanted and game on, Have fun fellow gamers!

I'm so bummed over the Switch. I've been hunting for one and haven't gotten one yet. Then my wife got laid off last night, so RIP to my nintendo money :(

Quake: Champions looks SO FUCKING AWESOME.

It better come to consoles or I'll be so pissed. Feels like an Unreal Tournament game.

Got home from a hard day of drinking for St. Patrick's day earlier tonight and noticed that I had a new game in my Steam library (and by new I mean I think it's from a few months ago but I just noticed it today). Apparently the people who made Darksiders released a remastered version of the game and gave it away free to owners of the original. Given that Darksiders was a game I played about a quarter of on the 360 before abandoning it in my ever-growing pile of games and since it's basically a Zelda clone and there's a new Zelda game out, I figured I'd give it another go.

After playing it for a couple of hours tonight, I remember both why I was really interested in this game and also why I never finished it. The game is fun and the level design is great, but man, the combat just wears on you. You have to fight so many waves of enemies to the point where it just gets exhausting.

Still, I think I'm actually going to aim to finish it this time.

Sorry if they had a sad button I would have hit it but that sucks man. Keep your head up and yeah you had to camp out for one, like I did for two hours in a freaking Blizzard. However unless you wanted BotW on the go you are not missing that much. I like indie and small games so the system was worth it.

Secondly sorry about your wife and the struggles, I been there and will be again and it sucks when this happens. This is why I try to enjoy everything I have that I fought and or claimed. Life. Finally back to the Switch get you and yours back on track and get it close to holiday by then there might be a game line up you want. If you have the money over stock games but play BotW first trust me. Best of luck to you and your wife man.

Well at the moment I just started up my Xenoblade Chronicles for the 3DS which I bought a long time ago!

I have a few hundred games (mostly Jap RPGs) so I am constantly switching between them, lately I have been playing Fire Emblem Conquest/Birthright and the Legend of Heroes games. I am on Persona 5 and the new fire emblem to come out!

I was going through my Humble Bundle account and realized that I had some Steam keys available for games that I already own. These are free to you guys on a first-come, first-served basis.
