Been playing the beta. It's awesome.

Little disappointed seeing some videos that they're doing the "class" system thing that everyone feels the need to do since Call of Duty.

Kinda wanted this to be a throwback to a true arcade shooter. All weapons and items on the map. All characters the same at the start. No special unique powers or anything like that. Whatever you can get is out on the map. The only thing you start with is the basic weapon that everyone else starts with.

You would think, with esports being such a huge thing now, that this type of game would come back.

CS:GO is the closest thing to this with its monetary system, but what happened to shooters built on map and spawn control and teams' knowledge of timing and trading neutral resources?

That was my favorite part of playing Halo 3 competitively when I was younger. It seems the entire genre has moved away from it, and that's created the ability to 'camp' like in Call of Duty or have silly objectives like in Overwatch.

I've moved away from FPS games because of this trend, and your post just made me realize it.
 
Doom was a flash in the pan partly because of it. They tried to do the mix of class and arcade and it didn't work.

Hopefully the only thing Quake is doing is the special power thing, and not weapon load out selecting. All weapons and powerups need to be on the map.

But none of those games, CS:GO, COD, Overwatch, lend themselves to 1v1. All competitive play has to be team based, because of the whole pre-loadout class style. The map serves no purpose without more players.

Old style Quake and even Halo had a thriving 1v1 scene because the map, even with two players, still matters. You can't just sit and camp a corner, lest you feel like not getting weapons or armor or w/e else. So you still had to play the full map.
 
Quake is nowhere near Overwatch or other hero based games in terms of how much that aspect affects the gameplay. Everyone is slightly different, nothing gamebreaking besides one or two that may need tuned.

I feel like the success of Overwatch has Quake trying to ape some of that spotlight rather than doing what Quake has always done well, which is fast-paced, twitch-style gameplay. Doom tried to do the same thing, although in that instance I think it was more to do with appealing to the console crowd's slower-paced gameplay needs than trying to mimic Overwatch.

I do wish we'd get a true twitch shooter. I miss the Unreal Tournament series. I always played those over Quake, along with Team Fortress Classic and then, obviously, Team Fortress 2 (which I still play). I still think Unreal Tournament 2004 is the best shooter in that style ever made. Such a great fucking game with awesome vehicles, and Onslaught was a fantastic game mode.
 
Picked up Battlegrounds at the urging of some of my friends. Game is tense as fuck, especially if you make it to the end.

For those unfamiliar, it's based on the film Battle Royale. You and 99 other players parachute onto a deserted island filled with various weapons, accessories (scopes, silencers, etc.), and armor/clothing. The island is massive, but as you play the area of play shrinks at periodic intervals, with an electric field that will quickly kill you enforcing it. Naturally, this funnels surviving players into each other and forces you to keep moving, which means camping tends to be, at best, a short-term strategy. You die, you're done.

You can play the game solo, in duos, or in squads of three or four. I've spent my entire time doing squad mode and it's a ton of fun. Once you get down to the end, it gets pretty crazy. In one game, I was one of the last three players alive, my entire squad was dead, and I had to move up a tree-covered hill to avoid getting fried by lightning. At that point, I'd killed four or five people in a short amount of time and almost died half a dozen times, taking cover and using medkits (which takes ten tense seconds where you can't move or aim) to restore my health. I died moving up the hill (survived longer than one of the guys and finished second, so not too shabby), but it was still a lot of fun and my heart was fucking pounding as the game ended. Not a lot of games can do that to you.

If any of you have ever played DayZ, the game is very similar as far as gameplay goes, although I find the shooting to be a lot more responsive in Battlegrounds. That was always a big issue for me in DayZ. I felt like I was always fighting the controls, and aiming/shooting were just godawful. Here it's solid. Movement is clunky, but the game is in pre-release mode, so that could very well be tightened over time.

Still, there's nothing like when you have to run across an open field terrified the entire time that someone is going to open fire and drop you. Or when you open your inventory to add attachments to your weapons knowing that you're totally vulnerable.

I picked Battlegrounds up a couple weeks back and I've really been impressed. The game is a breath of fresh air. Granted, I never played King of the Kill which everyone compares this to, but I've been having a blast. As you said, this game is tense as fuck. Even after playing this for a couple weeks now, I still get incredibly nervous when you're down to the last 10-15 players.

There's a few things they need to iron out. I don't really like how impactful the circle is in the late game. I've died to the circle more than I have enemy players. If you get a circle that favors you, great! If not, you're pretty much dead and there's nothing you can do about it. I'm not really even sure how to remedy this, as you have to force players into fights.

Be glad you just got it, Jack, because the last patch was a major improvement on performance. The game performed really awful even with good rigs before the patch. They optimized a lot, as well as fixing quite a few bugs.

All in all though, this is my game of the year so far. Environment, gun control, pace, sound, balance are all really nice. They need to work on movement and UI, the game's really going to shine. I'm really impressed for it being "Early Access".

You really should check out the other game modes. Solo is a ton of fun, it's a completely different game than Squad, or even Duo's. I've won a game in every mode, and winning in solo is by far the most satisfying.
 
Finished Breath of the Wild today. Can't recommend that game enough. I've never had so much fun just wandering around in a game, and the epic moments sprinkled throughout are great.
 
Anyone getting Prey next week?

Game looks good, and it's Bethesda. I need to finish ME:A first before I buy it though.

Read this story a bit ago. Fucking depressing. No One Lives Forever was a fantastic series, and it's ridiculous that it can't be brought back because none of the companies that may own the rights to it know whether or not they own the rights, are unwilling to figure it out, and thus won't participate. They're basically being offered free money and are turning it down.
