The "What are you playing now?" Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I trying to decide if I want to get an Xbox X, PS4 Pro, or Switch. I already have a very old Xbox One in the livingroom, but this console would go in the bedroom along with a new 4K HDR TV.

I feel like they all have their pros and cons, and I can't decide:

X: Most powerful console, 4K BlueRay player, but I already have an X-one that does not do 4K.

PRo: $150 cheaper right now with the right bundle, somewhat 4K gaming, Some great games I want to play. But I would also have to buy PSN for multiplayer, and the 4K gaming graphics are not as good as the X, which is a little unfortunate because I'm getting a 4K HDR TV to pair with this.

Switch: Cheapest, ZELDA, on the go. Worse graphics, so it defeats the purpose of the 4K HDR tv, and I'm only interested in Zelda, and a possible future Pokemon RPG game.

Truthfully, right now its between the PS4 Pro and the X.

Help!

Tough.

To me, I've always been Xbox and have dabbled in Playstation, but man, I won't lie, Playstation seems to have the exclusives.

I bought an Xbox One X and a 4K TV recently. It's been great. And I know the PS4 Pro isn't as power/not true true 4K or whatever....

I plan to buy a Switch, but not for a while. I'd cross it off your list unless you really need Zelda. I'll buy it in a couple years when the price drops and/or when I have nothing to play. By then I assume a new Metroid will be out too and I can at least kinda justify a purchase.

So really, IMO, you have to do this:

1) Check PS4 exclusives. Determine if they are important to you. Days Gone, God of War, Uncharted series, Bloodborne, Last of Us and its sequel coming next year, etc. I'm sure I'm forgetting some good ones. Are these games you want to play? Compare them to Xbox exclusives. Halo...uh...Gears....uh...anything else? And those are two franchises that we really don't know what the future holds for. So if those Sony exclusives are what tickle your fancy, get the PS4 Pro and enjoy it, I'm sure the games will look phenomenal on 4K even if it isn't as powerful as the XOX.

2) Those exclusives don't do it for you? Go XOX. You can get all your multiplatform games on there and reap the benefits of having true 4K and the most powerful console and the perks that come with that. You won't really be missing on much.

I have Xbox One X and a Playstation 4 Slim, it does the trick, I get my multiplatform games on XOX and still get to play all the exclusives on Playstation. Just wasn't worth the extra money for the PS4 Pro in all honesty, but that's just my situation.

There are a bunch of games on PS4 that I want, especially the future Kojima game, but that wont be for another year+.

Anyways, what I would LOVE TO KNOW if the PS4 Pro 4K HDR is comparable to the X. Like is there a noticable difference between the two? Because the X is supposed to be more "native" and the Pro is upscaled.

I'd go with the PS4 since you already have the Xbox One. Plus it just has so many better exclusives - Horizon Zero Dawn, Last of Us, Bloodborne, Nioh, Nier Automata, Persona 5, Infamous, God of War series, Uncharted series, Ratchet and Clank, MLB the Show, etc. And plenty of cool exclusives coming up.

From a purely graphical standpoint, it depends on how much 4K matters to you..

If you're really interested in seeing your games rendered at 4K HDR and done well, then you probably want to get a gaming PC and just say fuck it.

If you just want decent 4K gaming then the Xbox One X is probably good enough.

If you just want the games rendered at 4K and upscaled, then the PS4 Pro is good enough.

If you don't mind your TV handling the upscaling from 1080p (which was previously upscaled from 720p) then the Switch should be fine.

Personally, I'm using a Nvidia Shield to stream 4K from my home office to my TV in the living room (for games that aren't lag sensitive, otherwise I'll play on my monitor). I'm getting 4K HDR and driving that with a GTX 1080 Ti.

However.... if I didn't have a PC, and if I didn't download my 4K content 100% exclusively, then I'd probably go with the Xbox One X simply because its somewhat better at 4K gaming and includes a decent 4K blu-ray player, which, again, is just decent... Colors are off, tone-mapping is off, and there are other obvious issues with the picture compared to better blu-ray players; but, you'd at least have the functionality.

But, personally, I download all my 4K HDR movies and just stream them over the home LAN.

Been playing Black Flag this week since Ubisoft gave it to me. Pretty fun game. Has a lot of the same issues all the other AssCreed games have, in that you character never seems to do what you want him to when free running, which poses difficulties during the ten thousand chase and stealth sequences in these games, but the scenery is pretty and the pirate setting is unique and interesting. The ship combat is the highlight thus far. Just a lot of fun to attack and then board enemy ships.

Overall, decent AssCreed entry given that I haven't played this series in ages. I wish they'd just drop the stupid Abstergo future stuff and focus on the historical fiction. I didn't mind the Abstergo stuff when the games first started, but it's clearly they have no intention of ever going anywhere with that portion of the story, so why not just drop it entirely?

I cannot do the PC route as its the most expensive route.

My only concern by going the PS4 route is that I don't know just how much of a difference there is between "native 4k" and "upscaling" that PS4. Can you or someone explain/show just how much of a downgrade the PS4 would be when it comes to 4K HDR gaming when compared to the X? Would I be missing much?

Man I've been running through FInal Fantasy V and it's a damn rough one. I've died a shit ton, but thankfully death isn't that punishing.

So I had these last two weeks of the year off from work and decided to finish some games that I bought last December...

-Dead Space - was okay, wasn't really expecting much out of it besides killing monsters in a dark space setting and that's pretty much all I got.

-Ori and The Blind Forest - I had really high hopes for this game, but honestly it is insanely overrated. All you do is just jump and smash X pretty much the whole game. The artwork and music is beautiful for sure. The gameplay was boring and the story was stupid in the end.

-Shadow of Mordor - I ended up getting really tired of it at like the 6 hour mark and just grinded out until the ending. Took ~16 hours to beat. It was really cool at first but then just got monotonous. I was expecting a cool boss fight to finish the game but all I got was quick time events... really lame. Also, the ending was pretty damn weak. Unless I wasn't really following the story correctly, it seemed like the game ended without actually wrapping up the story.

Yea Shadow of Mordor I didn't need to buy to see how it would play out. Watched it streamed for a bit and could see it was gonna be a lot like the first Assassins Creed. Really cool movement and idea..but no depth. Same basic thing every single mission.

Didnt like Ori, opinions invalid.

pubg pubg pubg since launch on xb1x... cant get enough. flawed as hell but fun with friends

I just finished the homicide saga in LA Noire (yes, I'd never played it before for some strange reason so I'm playing through the remaster). How is it possible that nobody on Google has made the connection between this game and True Detective?

I mean, you play as two detectives named Cole Phelps and Rusty Galloway... or, Rustin Cohle per True Detective.

Then, it's revealed that the notorious Dahlia killer is a character you've met but only once... same as Errol Childress. The Dahlia killer is from a renowned family in high places, just like the Childress family.

And finally, the entire catacombs sequence and musical score where you get to kill the Dahlia killer is literally the ending of True Detective, complete with religious symbology and gothic undertones.

I'm totally flipping out over this revelation.

Seeing that LA Noire came out a full 3 years before True Detective aired...

I'm not a huge gamer, but I got a Switch for Christmas and I love it. I've been playing a ton of Mario Odyssey, but just recently downloaded Rocket League. This may be the most addictive game I've ever played, I can't get enough of it. I've probably put in like 10 hours of it over the last week. I suck, but it's still fun.
