The "What are you playing now?" Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Yeah, although I'd recommend he read a summary of the first two games or find a short YouTube video or something. I think the game does a really good job of not strictly requiring you to be familiar with the previous games, but it's just such a vast world and Geralt literally knows fucking everybody that a little familiarity helps.

I loved that in-game glossary, though. It was such a great resource. I usually ignore those in games, but I was so pulled in by the game that I wanted to read everything I could to get more involved in the universe.

Hadn't played the previous 2, so I definitely had to look a few things up but overall I think he can go in pretty blind and still get most of the full experience. Truly, the only way to really replicate it would be to go back and play Witcher 1 and 2 which he probably doesn't want to do. The game's story and characters left strong impressions on me and I went in pretty blind to the series. It's a testament to CDPR's story and character development in that game.

Horizon is a game I hear a lot of good things about too, @Stark although I never played it. Someday maybe I'll get to it.

By the way, if anyone picked up Vermintide 2 on PC (just came out today) I got it as well, I'm down to play. Only $30, first person loot based hack and slash set in Warhammer Fantasy. Pretty fun game to sink a few hours a week into with friends.

Still playing Warhammer Total War 2. Tomb Kings are a badass DLC addition. The DLC model for this game is really strong, some of it you pay for but it's worth it, super high quality, and then there's free shit too.

We have Far Cry 5 at the end of the month, and God of War reboot in April, then in May we'll get State of Decay 2 (only $30!).

Not a bad Spring. Can't wait to see what is coming in the second half of the year. Hopefully I can be caught up on all my games by then. Still haven't touched Shadow of War and The Evil Within 2, picked these up on the cheap for like $20 but haven't gotten to them.

Since RDR2 got postponed a bit, I'm soon going to be looking for a game to pretty much consume weeks out of my summer when the weather is shitty.

I've narrowed my list down to:
- Witcher 3 (have not played the previous games)
- Wolfenstein II (didn't play the first)
- Horizon Zero Dawn

Also taking suggestions. I'm currently finishing (what likely will be my final full-fledged) playthrough of Skyrim with all of the mods and will likely start my final full-fledged playthrough of Fallout 4 shortly after that.
I completed Horizon Zero Dawn like a month ago. It's a really beautiful game and I think the mechanics are so smooth.

RDR2 is really what I'm waiting for too man. Literally that is all I'm looking forward to. But it just keeps getting pushed back. I'd rather them get it right though.

Right now I've been playing Fortnite. I had it when it first dropped on Ps4 and the game has changed so much since then. Not mechanically much, but just style wise and how much they update and add things to the game. And it's free? Crazy. Honestly the most fun I've had playing video games since childhood, probably ever. It's thrilling to me.

My sister just got a Ps4 and she hasn't played video games much. I've been trying to find good co-op games, preferably open world, we can play together. Fortnite is one. But I was thinking Far Cry 4, I beat that a long time ago but it's a fun game to just mess around. Never played Ark but it's on my radar as an option maybe. I don't know, it's hard to find games like this that span across diverse tastes that both people can enjoy. I know PC has more options but I don't have a PC so I'm looking at Ps4. Hopefully Red Dead can be co-op.

Are you building with strictly wood?

Because as you go up to brick and then finally metal each gets slower but also much stronger.

The building system is what makes the game so unique and great. Building is basically the most essential skill to winning games.

I consistently drop Tilted Towers and have only won a couple solo but it's always fun and very high paced.

Watching Ninja on Twitch has improved my game immensely and I'm constantly trying to tweak and emulate things I see pros do.
I watch Ninja as well. And I like Dakotaz. Problem is, I can't exactly emulate what I see playing on console. The game is pretty different. You can't build half as fast on console or be as precise and it can get a bit frustrating, but I've gotten used to it.

My skill level is about average I'd say. I'm good for 3-5 kills a game fairly consistently. I've gotten a lot better the more I've played. Especially with building and shooting accuracy (although bloom can get annoying but I don't think it's too bad overall). I've gotten a pretty good feel for the snipers and bullet drop now as well. Shotguns are so crucial in the game. The inconsistency of the hit damage is probably the toughest thing. You can hit someone in the head for 9 damage and that makes no sense. I'd don't aspire to be super good like the streamers, but I'd like to at least be above average to the point where I can get 7-10 kills fairly often.

One of my biggest obstacles is that I can't hear where players are coming from worth a darn. I think they are below me when they are actually above me and vice versa. But I don't use headphones either. But I notice streamers can hear people very accurately and know exactly where to go to counter.

I've also never bought the battle pass or any v-bucks yet either but it's getting so tempting. They know how to market. All the rewards I get that have accumulated if I just bought the thing. They have a lot of cool stuff that I would like to have, but they haven't dropped anything yet that I can't absolutely live without. I just wouldn't want to get caught up spending hundreds on this game :chuckle:

I picked up Warhammer: Vermintide 2 yesterday.

If you're unfamiliar, it's basically Left 4 Dead set in the Warhammer End Times universe. The enemies are hordes of rat creatures (who are allied with some human/zombie warriors in this one), and the settings are you standard fantasy fare.

I've never been a Warhammer fan, so I'm not all that familiar with this particular version. I just know the apocalypse is on and it's my job to murder as many rats as possible.

Much like Left 4 Dead, the game has an AI director whose sole job is to make your life a living hell. He sends hordes upon you, spawns special enemies and bosses (outside of certain points where hordes or boss fights are part of the level), and drops health kits and ammo for you.

I've played about half of the levels so far and I'm liking the game. It's frantic and gripping when you're in the middle of a massive fight and everyone is just trying desperately to stay alive. It's a flurry of hundreds of enemies mindlessly rushing you and allied powers and bombs flying all around you. This is the closest I've experienced in a game to nailing how it must have felt in Lord of the Rings during the set-piece battles.

Thus far, I've only played as the elf character, Kerillian, and only one of her classes. There are five characters and each one has three different classes. Each of the three classes is a unique spin on the character, with different passive and active skills. For example, my elf has an active volley skill that fires a handful of homing arrows. Her passive abilities include holding double the arrows, slowly regenerating health when below half, and no arrow damage drop-off.

I've been using a swift bow, which does less damage than a regular bow (which I can also use), but can fire off arrows at a ridiculous clip. I can also move at full speed while knocking back my arrows, which turns the game into almost an FPS when I have full ammo. The swift bow is so much fun because, during the horde assault segments of the game, I can just rapid fire dozens of arrows in a matter of seconds, downing rat after rat as they rush the group. It's great for crowd control, especially if the party is able to find a suitable chokepoint to weather the horde.

Complaint-wise, I think the game requires some balancing. There are times when I think the difficulty spikes to a ridiculous degree, and the game doesn't drop anywhere near enough ammo for a character like mine who relies on it to be at maximum effectiveness. I do have a melee weapon as well, but the class can't soak up a ton of damage, making melee less than ideal, especially against armored foes.

Visually, the game is gorgeous. There are some pretty incredible looking levels, like one where you're fighting through a city where a massive chasm has opened in the center. There's one point where you're fighting along buildings that are sliding down the side of the chasm and it's fucking awesome. The city seems to stretch for miles to your right, with buildings collapsing and sliding down on your left to provide you with a path forward. Still got about five levels to go too, as there are thirteen total.

I'd recommend it if you're looking for that Left 4 Dead experience. It's got some issues, and the menu system is obtuse, but it's fun. I've got three or four friends who have bought it already, and the game improves significantly with friends that you can easily coordinate strategies with.

Yeah.

I’m at the point where I can get those 7-9 kill games if I drop at Tilted Towers, maybe at about a 10% rate. However, Ive struggled to close out and get the overall wins.

The game is so fun and addicting, yet so simple.

As far as the battle pass, I bought it because the game was free and I like it so much that I figure I’d support what they’re doing so they can keep putting out cool shit. Literally nothing they’ve added so far has been bad (although I’m skeptical on jetpacks). But for 10 bucks the amount of things you can earn is staggering. I can’t wait to throw on the John Wick skin and wreck some leagues. :chuckle:

I suck at tilted towers man. I must have trouble getting to the guns first or something because I barely get to the ground and I get one shotted half the time. I can get down fast, but like I said, not being able to hear people accurately is killing me. There is so much going on and I can't hear exactly where people are.

I was getting so frustrated yesterday. It was killing my love for the game. I land there to try to get better at gun fights but it seems unproductive for me. I'm better out in the open trying to strategically take out people end game.

It is hard on console/controller to switch to building and weapons quickly. I've never used keyboard and mouse before in gaming, but I'm getting really tempted to try it out on Ps4. Which I'm sure there would be an adjustment period, but overall I know it would make me a lot better. That being said, I don't think they should allow keyboard and mouse on Ps4 to keep it fair. But it is in the game.

I picked it up but have barely played yet, been away all weekend.

You need to get a headset with in game volume. It will help incredibly.

Being able to accurately hear where people are is half of the battle.

I’m also on PS4, and am getting better at building quickly, although I’m not sure a keyboard would really help on PS4 because I don’t think you can hot key the building? It still would be a switch function I believe? Let me know if I’m wrong here because I’ve also thought about getting mouse and keyboard for my PS4.

Been playing a lot of Fortnite myself. Those of you struggling with landing, the goal is to land over the top of a mountain that you can then glide into the populated areas from. Your glider coming out is all about how far you are off the ground, so if you're over a mountain, yours will deploy sooner.

I'm getting decent at building, but I can still go waaaay quicker. I've been streaming off and on as I suck and try to get better. Twitch name is the same as on here if anyone is interested in watching and talking strategies and such.

When it comes to gun play, I've found the current 20 man meme game mode has helped. You get to shoot at a lot of people and practice positioning and moving and building into fights and all of that without the pressure of only having yourself to rely on.

I guess I'm not sure on the keyboard but I thought under the settings it lets you bind the keys how you want.

Also, if you don't mind me asking, what kind of headset do you have and do you have any recommendations?

Since I have an Xbox as well I went and got one at Walmart for like 50 bucks that works for both consoles. I can still hear everything when it comes to Fortnite and where guys are perfectly fine.

Turtle beaches are usually a good go in the 80$ price range but a quick google search can give you the best ones if you can go out of those ranges.

I’d also advise you to go to your setting and turn up “Sound FX volume” to 100% when you get a chance.

I play fortnite with a mouse and keyboard on PS4 and building is actually harder in my experience. You can’t hotkey, it’s still scrolling through the menus. It feels a little more cumbersome. I use the mouse and keyboard because I’m a long time pc gamer and I’m more comfortable than with a controller in a game that requires aim. I find killing people a thousand times easier due to that comfort level.

Building is definitely the key thing to practice though. Couldn’t tell you how many 2nd places I’ve gotten because I murder everyone I see when it’s chaotic but then when it gets down to the last couple people I get beat by someone who outbuilds me and uses it to their advantage.
