The "What are you playing now?" Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Tombstone was the first thing I thought of when I first saw the trailer with Valentine and then actually got there in-game. It's pretty much perfect.

So I'm playing the white hat my first playthrough, and thus have been trying to re-create a Doc Holliday (which seems fitting considering I'm 90% sure that guy who coughed on me during a collection mission gave me tuberculosis) look with my outfit and facial hair.

Want to do a black hate replay and cosplay as Johnny Ringo.

That's awesome, haha. Have you played the online yet? I've seen a lot of great character recreations of old western guys.

Haven't tried it yet. Plan to later, but the single-player has me pretty hooked right now.

Watching Tombstone right now, though, as I saw it on Hulu and Red Dead had me in a western mood. Also gonna rewatch Deadwood, but I needed to do that anyway with the movie coming out so this was perfect timing.

Amazing how many famous actors are in Tombstone.

Was playing Red Dead and walked into the Valentine saloon right as a guy was trying to walk out. We bumped into each other, and that would probably been that, but I drew my gun while trying to lock on to him to talk. I quickly put the gun away, not wanting to end up having to do a shoot out with the local fuzz.

Then the game decided to have some fun with me. I locked on to the guy to talk to him, hoping to soothe things over, and chose the Greet option. Arthur promptly challenged him to a duel, which was accepted. So, naturally, I walked outside to begin the duel. Right as the R2 prompt was about to pop up, the guy I was dueling muttered, "Ground's coming up real fast" and then promptly passed out while a comical musical note sounded.

I walked back inside the saloon and heard several people laughing about what had just happened.

That was amazing.

More Red Dead fun...

As anyone who has played the game knows, there are challenges that you are tasked with completing. These give you XP (which in turn upgrades your health, dead eye, and stamina), along with unlocking some merchant items.

The challenge in question here is to kill ten enemies using crafted shotgun ammunition. For me, that means incendiary shells, as those are either the only ones I have unlocked or the only ones I have the ingredients to make (honestly not sure).

I happened upon a stagecoach being strongarmed by some Lemoyne Raiders (one of the gangs in the game) and decided that was a nice opportunity to tick a few enemies off my ten kill list. There were three of them, and they were all dead and burning pretty immediately thanks to dead eye.

That's where shit went sideways. Instead of thanking me, the stagecoach driver became a witness to my crime and I became wanted. I didn't want it to turn into a shootout with the law, so I took off. In the process, I maneuvered my horse (named Roach, naturally) through a small patch of fire. Moments later, he literally burst into flames and died over the span of about half a second and then just ragdolled, sending me flying.

Needless to say, that was not how I saw that encounter playing out.

I loaded my save.

In order to 100% the game and get the Legend of the West satchel, you have to complete all of the challenges (I think there are about 80?) as one of the requirements.

Some of them are relatively easy. I don't think any of the first four or five of any of the different challenge branches are particularly difficult; some may be a bit time consuming, but not necessarily hard.

But holy shit, towards the end on almost all of the challenge trees, you're going to want to pull your hair out if you ever end up attempting them.

Gambler Challenge IX is borderline impossible from what I've read. Horseman Challenge X makes you find, break, and ride every single breed of horse in the game. Herbalist Challenge X makes you first kill a bunch of animals to get all of the different kinds of meat (I think there are 11 or 12), and THEN you have to season them with the four different spices, individually. Weapons Expert X makes you kill a grizzly using only throwing knives without taking ANY damage.

I'm not past stage five or six on any of the challenges on my second playthrough yet, but I'm already thinking about padding my controller so it survives how many times I chuck it at the wall. :chuckle:

Fucking Red Dead has me re-watching Tombstone and Deadwood.

Anyone got any other good western recommendations? Probably seen most of them, but always open to suggestions.

I wish I was into single player games like some of you guys.

Main issue with Red Dead is the controls are an absolute mess. Nothing intuitive about them. I'm at the fifteen to twenty hour mark and I still don't have them completely down. Using the same button to pull your gun and shoot it was not the smartest design decision.

The UI is awful and unintuitive too. Didn't even realize you could manually save for the first five hours because it's inexplicably hidden in the Story section of the menu.

I took a Usability Engineering class in college and the prof would have been appalled at this game's menu and control design.
While I loved Red Dead, it did have its issues.

As far as the controls and usability, I will say that I also had trouble with it in the same way that I had trouble with Grand Theft Auto 5.

To me, it felt like they took the GTA 5 engine and reskinned it to the Wild Wild West and made some changes to suit horse play vs car theft and driving.

Wow, this is the first time i'm hearing of this. Whats wrong with the standard left trigger to pull, right trigger to fire? Or in pc world right click to pull and left click to fire?

If this game ever makes it to pc they are going to have to change that because mouse clicks aren't analogue.

So, to clarify, if you have your gun drawn, L2 indeed does aim and R2 does fire.

However, when your gun is holstered, L2 is used to focus on NPCs by holding it down. At this point, R2 is used to draw your weapon. The problem, of course, will be that one time you accidentally pull R2 twice and then you're suddenly in a shootout with an entire town. :chuckle:
