Tim Duncan Announces Retirement

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Never saw Timmy live....

for those who saw Duncan live at a game, what struck you the most?

Exactly like the LeBron epiphany effect...you'd be watching the game, wondering when he was going to take over, then you look up at the score board before the beginning of the 4th quarter and he'd have 18, 10, 3, and 3 and you'd ask yourself when the hell did that happen.

To me, that's one of the clearest signs of true greatness...when you don't notice it for the majority of the time, but then it all hits you at once.

It's hilarious that some NBA fans are blaming Durant for making TD retire. He really made that decision after Durant's own The Decision.

Hmmm, that's tough to say. Later in his career it was a lot more noticeable at games how he was playing on seemingly one leg. I mean when you could focus on him the whole possession while the tv cameras usually follow the ball. He was a real leader on the floor on the defensive end, you'd see him directing everyone, though I imagine you'd see the same from LeBron calling out assignments and such. If the other team huddled up and it wasn't an official timeout sometimes Tim would walk over and join the huddle to see what play the other coach was drawing up.

I do regret that I never saw Tim from a courtside seat. If you guys can swing it, go see LeBron from a courtside seat sometime, you'll never believe how much different the game looks from that close. I did get to see a few HOF bigs courtside though. David Robinson looked like superman from courtside, his speed and jumping ability when you see it from a few feet away was unreal. I imagine LeBron would be really similar, I can't imagine how impressive his chasedown block on Iguodala must have looked from those seats. I got to see Moses Malone play courtside, and he looked like the baddest man on earth the way he fought for position and just took rebounds away from people. I also got to see Barkley courtside one time and those two hand jams look a lot more vicious at eye level than just a few rows up or on TV. My dad even took a photo of one of those two hand dunks that he could have easily sold to Fleer for Barkley's basketball card, but he gave one copy to a Spurs ballboy and the other to Barkley himself.

Favorite TD moment. Fun Fact: That was the only three point shot he made all season out of nine total. Even though they went on to lose to LA in the conference finals, this shot pretty much sums up Duncan's entire offensive game. Slow yet smooth and effective. Doesn't wow you with his athleticism by any means but does almost everything the correct way. Had as good of footwork as Shaq and his mid-range game was one of the best i've seen from a big.

Perhaps the most words i've heard Popovich speak in a single media appearance. Just goes to show the amount of respect he had for Timmy D. Quite a touching tribute.

That was some tribute by Popovich. It's worth watching/listening to the entire thing. Pop was pretty much choked up the whole time, but also talked about how clever and intelligent he is, and just how good a human being Duncan is.

The reward for doing everything thing the right way is the reaction Duncan's retirement is getting. Dude can write his own ticket in terms of business/professional opportunites moving forward, and decent fans everywhere have him on the Mount Rushmore of class athletes.
