Tristan Thompson

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
For those players in the playoffs defending 2.5+ three pointers per game, Tristan is the third best defender:

1. Taj Gibson; 13.8 DFG%; opponents usually shoot 37.1%, -23.3%

2. Klay Thompson; 15.4 DFG%; opponents usually shoot 38.4%, -23.0%

3. Tristan Thompson ; 15.8 DFG%; opponents usually shoot 36.7%, -20.9%

The other two defend (or defended in Gibson's case) more threes, but still, TT's close outs after switching have been great

To add to that, Toronto shot 44.4 percent against Tristan Thompson around the basket on 45 attempts, Hes been great overall on defense looked like a completely different player than the regular season.

I guess this entire team and coaching staff have a playoff mode, overall we look like a completely different team on both ends, switch is real and Tristan has one too.

I miss the floater he used to take from below the foul line. He doesn't look to shoot and now even looks scared when he has the ball with less than 10s on the clock

I think he's looked totally different this series. Some of it is how they played the Raptors, but the number of shots contested is dramatically different.

I think it's the rest: to have a chance against GS need to keep the ECF short. All our guys play significantly better with rest

He was money with that and the hook across the lane. Both were high % shots.

He should work on his mid range all summer. him being a threat from there might make the Cavs that much better.
The spacing with him, especially when players get into the lane is just abysmal and makes it very hard to score when his player leaves him completely to help out.

Ehh...I really don't even want him worrying about making 15 footers.

I'd rather him simply work on his body more(he's become an absolute beast physically...I'm sure there's ways to improve).

I'd really like for him to work on, specifically, his upper body strength. (I'm not saying it's weak...but I think it can get better).
I'd also like for him to work on his quick jumping in succession. He's already one of the quickest in the league at it(helps him get OREBS a lot). But I think he could improve and get a lot more easy tip-ins rather than just OREBS.

And as for basketball, I want him to use that added upper body strength to help him with catching the ball, immediately rising up, going STRONG to the rim, and finishing. Work on it in many different facets, try to get as quick and smooth and natural of a motion as possible. He's got pretty good hands. If he is quicker, more decisive, stronger, and more explosive to the rim, Tristan could EASILY average a double double. Especially with Kyrie's improved play-making...I could see Tristan easily going from 8/9 to 12-13/10.

Also, let's try to up the FT's to the mid 60's low 70's next year. If he can shoot 75% from the line he can shoot 1 corner three a game.

Defensively I just need him to become a better weak side help-defender. There's no reason he can't be just as good, just as tough, just as tenacious as a guy like Draymond is inside. Honestly he can be even better than that because of his hops and natural shot-blocking abilities. Don't get me wrong, Tristan is VERY good in this area. Even better in the playoffs. But Draymond is flat-out tenacious. He's a monster. Tristan can get there. Tristan could absolutely make an all-defense team or even be a DPOTY candidate if he improves in this area. He's already a very very good pick&roll defender, good isolation defender, great at switching onto guards. He can improve as a post defender a little bit too even though nobody posts up anymore. He's not bad in the post, but he tends to get duped by reverse spin moves pretty easily because he overplays a guys strong side.

Agreed with @InBoobieWeTrust, with roles players I'm not concerned at all with them expanding their games. I'm looking for them to strengthen their strengths, and be the best they can be in their roles.

For Tristan, work on being the best rebounder, defender, and finisher you can be.

Yeah a 15 footer is going to do him nothing. Nobody is worried about giving up mid range shots to guys who are low priority on offense. Now a three pointer would be another story, but we all know that's not happening.

Not talking about a 15 foot jumper.. a little closer inside the key. JV was leaving TT alone inside the key and doubling on Lebron/Kyrie and once TT did get the ball he dribbled straight towards JV just to get blocked. I think that should be in his arsenal, I mean every player should be able to shoot that close to the basket or atleast be a threat from there.

Just let your opponent know that you are capable from that distance to open up driving lanes.

He's already pretty good at finishing around the hoop to be honest. How many times have we seen Thompson make some tough catch as the shot clock winds down and hit a little hook or floater over the big? It's also worth pointing out that he's got an injured and bandaged right hand, which may explain his reluctance/inability to shoot those shots in the playoffs.

I don't think TT has ever missed a shot clock heave right? He has that hook that he uses at times but that's about it.

I really wish he could grow 2-3 extra inches more than adding anything else to his game.

YEah but that's unfortunately not possible :/
Does anyone have a footage of TT hitting jump shots in practice? the last shootaround I saw he looks pretty stiff shooting the ball. it's so rare to see a player not able to shoot at all, especially when he is undersized. Guys his size usually adapt and develop other aspects of their game.
