The Canadians had between 2500-3500 troops in Afghanistan for a over a decade. They crushed the Taliban offensive in 2009 with Leopard IIs. That is not an inconsiderable percentage of their active front-line strength. Norway has kept around 400-500 troops there in comparison in mostly non-combat roles.

They pulled-out after we started drawing down after the surge in 2011.

They built a hockey rink and Tim Hortons at KAF. The Canadian DFAC was great.

Talking Points Memo is citing a Wall Street Journal article (if not for that I likely wouldn't post from TPM) from January that basically links Trump's approach to NK in the summit to Putin. Now, because we don't have transcripts of the exact conversation, it's hard to say how directly Putin suggested this, but it's one in a long line of head-scratchers... Like, it's pretty obvious how the summit benefits Russia, who has aided NK in their development of nukes. Trump's hollow claims about being Russia's worst nightmare or whatever pale in comparison to the evidence of puppetry. He won't condemn Putin, he asks for Russia to rejoin the G8, he takes his foreign policy advise, he downplays Russia's ONGOING election interference... I still can't explain this dude's actions if not for what seems obvious, that Putin has something on him/they worked together to win the election in some capacity. Why is he so loyal to Russia?

So at what point do the tariffs completely backfire on Trump? Because it's really a matter of when, not if.

Not surprising that Israel is the reason why the US is leaving the council. The other countries will probably be excited about not having to deal with annoying Nikki.

I’m in the minority, and while I think Trump makes it sound idiotic, a part of the military focused on access to space sounds like a good idea.

China and Russia are both working on technology that will deny other countries’ ability to use space for Earthly security strategies. We should be competing.

IDK if militarizing our space efforts is entirely a good idea, but it could mean massive developments in new technology down the road.

It'd make me pretty happy if we could shift some of our world-policing budget toward space travel, but I'm afraid this is just another excuse to inflate the military budget in case we need to nuke the moon while we continue to make healthcare and welfare cuts.

There are actually a lot of problems with military spending. The system incentivizes the military to ask for huge sums of money because they have to budget five years down the road.

I really do not think this has anything to do with "nuking the moon," or even "securitizing space." Space is already securitized. The problem is that Russia and China can control space without future US developments, and that could give them control of a whole host of factors that require satellite technology.

What Trump said sounds stupid... But space is definitely a frontier that, eventually, the U.S. will need to secure.
