Virtual reality

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
bumping this because the cost of real VR is about to get significantly cheaper. Oculus Quest coming this spring for $399. Completely portable, full hand tracking, no computer needed.

It does not track movement, correct? So you have to use the controllers' joystick to move around?!!

Also, what is the battery life like on this thing?

It does track movement. Tracks your hands and tracks your own movement in the play area you set up. You would have to use the controller to teleport for long distance moves, but for games like boxing, you can just back up, step forward, or step to the side.

Not sure about the battery life, but whatever it is can be extended by plugging a portable charger in the USB port.

Now if only Xbox One X could incorporate this.

That looks sweet.

Oculus Quest is really milking this “spring release” for all it’s got.

When does the Quest come out? It was rumored to come out in the spring. Well it’s almost middle of May and there is no launch date that I’m aware of.

Any idea?

May 21st release, preorders now at oculus, amazon, best buy, etc. backlogged until may 29th now.

Oculus Quest came out today. Best Buy, Amazon, Walmart and Oculus have them online, some Best Buy's have them in stock.

recommendations between 64 ($399) and 128 ($499)?

I always go with more storage. It's a pain to run out and have to decide what to delete. That said, it'll probably take a while to run out of storage on 64gig version.

Here are the launch day game sizes (doesn't include the space the OS takes up - I think around 16 gigs, assume file sizes will grow with updates to the games).

one thing not on the list is side-loading the android version of Netflix, which is a little bit of a pain, but lets you download shows to watch on an airplane. I do this with the Oculus Go, and it looks like the quest is designed to work the same way. The standard quest version of Netflix inexplicably has lower resolution and doesn't allow downloads for offline viewing. If you know what you want to watch, a gig or two is plenty for any flight, but I download several episodes of several shows, so if I don't like one, I can watch something else.

Even with the screen door issue, it makes flights go by so much faster watching on a virtual movie screen instead of a phone/tablet. Especially with noise cancelling headphones on to mask all of the engine noise.

You wear a VR Headset with Noise Canceling Headphones on a plane?

yes, and watch Netflix on a virtual 180 inch screen. Recent flight the people beside me were drunk, said they started drinking at 6am. I put on my headset and enjoyed my flight in peace.
