I’d imagine Washington’s preference has to be unload Wall, keep Beal, right?

Wall’s game heavily relies on athleticism. He’s going to age horribly. And while he’s only 27 now, Beal is younger

Wall is also paid a fortune and everyone on his team seems to dislike him

I honestly think Wall is bordering on untradeable with his attitude, injury history and contract.

What team is realistically giving up anything meanful for him? Other than a decent draft pick and filler?

Maybe I’m too harsh on Wall but I struggle with wether I would even want him for #8 and filler.

Beal is certainly the guy who will survive that split, unless Washington just has to tear it down to the studs. Given Walls age in comparison, the organization could keep Wall as a ticket seller (if he just can’t be moved) and trade everyone else. Ride out Wall’s contract while accumulating assets for Beal, Porter, their own taking, etc.

I really don’t envy Washington’s position. They are going absolutely nowhere and when all these larger extensions kick in, they have no easy path to roster improvement.

Only a team exceptionally desperate (maybe the Cavs) would trade for John Wall. He'll be making ~$40M a year after next season... That's insane. I simply cannot imagine the Wizards keeping their core players together...

This Supermax bullshit is probably going to handicap teams more than help them like it was "supposed to do".

One of the many poor decisions/rules by the NBA in the last couple of years.

Well, FWIW, the Wizards had the option to trade Wall.. they decided he was worth the DPE. By comparison, the Bulls decided Butler was not worth the DPE, and since George missed the DPE, he gave up on the Pacers -- but they could've traded him knowing there was a risk, they simply chose to ride it out and hope for the best.

I think we'll see teams be more eager in the future to trade younger players while they still have at least 2 years left, so that they can maximize their value.

They will have to have it littered with valid benchmarks to qualify or shorten the length from 5 years to 3. I'm sure Hayward is probably leaning towards staying in Utah if he had qualified but the metrics they use (All-NBA nod) can be a popularity contest and are not legitimate indicators. The leverage that Utah had over Boston suddenly vanished because popular guards on bigger markets got the nod over Hayward, but positional constraints also raise some questions (DJ or Green are NOT top 15 players and shouldn't make it over PG (at least last year) or Hayward. On top of that there has been some positional politicking with certain player agency reps and teams so they can finesse guys onto All-Star rosters or All-NBA teams. If they're going to have writers vote then at least let these All-NBA teams reflect modern NBA basketball and go best 15 overall regardless of positions.

Adam Silver looking defeated when it comes the issue of tanking in the NBA. One thing he got right is the narrative behind how successful teams are built has changed over the past few years. I thought it was a good point he made about how teams that do it the right way sometimes get crucified by local writers and fans for not losing games. .

The endless tanking path only benefits the owners because management is held responsible for getting the picks right (see Orlando and Phoenix) and even when they do, Silver will then sacrifice Hinkie, while ignoring the fact that the Sixers will be celebrated and marketed for the next 10+ years.

Tanking will always exist at the level it currently does without a hard salary cap.

Basketball is a sport driven by stars. Stars are either drafted, signed in free agency, or traded for. Without stars, teams simply cannot win championships.

With the current salary rules, not only are stars important, but they are bunched up onto only the top teams. Unless a team is one of the few that are seen as desirable locations for free agents, it's only path to a star is through the draft or via trade.

What are young stars traded for? Desirable draft assets?

Tanking is the only viable solution for the Milwaukees, Phillys, Clevelands, Detroits, etc. of the world under the current cap structure.

The NFL is successful because great teams have to break up for cap reasons all the time. This spreads talent more evenly around the league. If Silver is serious about eliminating tanking, then he needs to get serious about talent distribution.

Durant's joining of the warriors shouldn't be possible.

Guys ring chasing for the MLE shouldn't be possible. Vet minimums should have a limit per each team.

The cap, as currently constructed, is a joke. Bad teams in small markets have no path to contention outside of tanking.

Well @Nathan S you said you'd believe our offense would struggle without another creator if you saw it. So you believe it?

I love Otto Porter, but this team needs someone else who can create.

Come on Brad Beal.

Well, it's been a tale of two halves so far tonight. Second half has been bizarre to say the least...Pacers just playing increasingly physical defense, and rightfully so because so far the refs haven't called a thing. Combine that with ice-cold three point shooting and it's a recipe for disaster. Hope they can turn it around in the clutch.

Why are we talking about Damian Lillard?
How about check back after the playoffs fam
What's going to happen after the playoffs? They're gonna lose to the same team we'll likely lose to.

Yeah, I'll probably get yelled at for this post, but it's kind of funny to look back now at how during March (these posts are from 1 month and 1 day ago) people in here were considering Dame untouchable and now people are questioning whether or not they even want to get Dame for the pick

Rich I don't mean this as an attack on you. Just that I maintained in this thread from the beginning that Portland should be looking to break it up and was met with talk that the lotto pick for Dame was a pipe dream joke.

It's natural for new information to change valuations of players, but we get pretty extreme on here about 1 month a guy is untouchable and the next half the board doesn't even want him.
