Happy Trails George Hill

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Hill blew it when he missed that FT, like Korver did the year before when he missed the corner three.
These guys just didn’t get it done when they needed it.

It's prob the worst missed free throw in Cavs history. 2nd is elbowgate lefthanded miss

Its official, he's the starter.

Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Tyronn Lue has settled on George Hill as his starting point guard to open the season, opting to bring prized rookie Collin Sexton off the bench.

"I think Collin has done a great job and I want him to understand the game, understand running our offense and understand picking and choosing his spots and G Hill is a great veteran to learn from," Lue said following Thursday's practice. "Watching him and talking to Collin every day and just teaching him is good for him.

"His day is going to come. His chance is going to come. His opportunity is going to come. Just learning the game and not putting so much pressure on him to start right away I think is good for him -- even though he's probably ready. From my mindset, I just want to make sure we ease him into it and he's comfortable and he's going to have his chance."

Both of those guys played a big part in just making it to the finals last year.

It's hard for me to sit back and watch bad takes. Some of what I'll read should be obvious if you are paying attention.

-Hill is a nine year vet who has mostly played third guard for great teams or starter for mediocre teams. His standing reach at the point guard position makes him ideal for a switching scheme. His hoops IQ is impressive, allowing him to play either back court position. He was such an asset in his prime S.A. flipped him for Kawhi.

- He does have his faults. He isn't reliable for 82 games. He goes through shooting slumps. He is, however, a lot better than what many fans remember from the NBA Finals. G.S. were above his punching weight as a player. That doesn't mean he wouldn't be a legit starter on most other NBA teams.

- There is no beef with Lue and Sexton. Lue's family and Sexton's family go back years. Lue is a much better development coach than he gets credit for because he knows playing time is the carrot on a stick for young players to improve weaknesses. Some fans don't get that and have mistaken themselves for basketball or educational experts. There's a plan for Sexton, who is both age 19 and never played with quality teammates regularly. Let the plan play out.

Have no issue with hill starting. Let Sexton watch a little. Learn. And play vs other teams second unit. He is 19. No rush

Yep. But Hill choked on the FT, and Kover missed the wide open three the year before.
Might both be different series if they were able to convert.
You have to produce in those moments, because ultimately that’s what you play for.

Hill was a guy I never wanted playing against my team. Don't know what happened to him, but like a lot of guys he could not get a wide open 3 once he got to Cleveland after leading the league in 3pt percentage.

I'm down with him starting for now, but I honestly can't wait till he is traded. Just being so passive when I felt like g he had been a major competitor in his career and the horrible missed free throw that would have been very very satisfying for Cavs fans and saved us some humiliation with the JR thing. Seriously George got saved from major criticism by JR not knowing the score.

I just want something else for him and that crazy contract

I was happy the Cavs got him because the guard position was a train wreck on defense and the contract was only 2 years guaranteed. Missing that free throw hurt though. Like Clarkson & Hood, he seemed to shrink more the tighter things got in the playoffs. It was disappointing.

But maybe the opposite is true now. Maybe he'll step up now that the pressure has gone down. And then maybe the Cavs can flip him for some assets with a longer shelf life before February ends.

Can we rename the thread to George Over the Hill?

Also, I'd do this.

Of course you would, so would I.

That trade isn't going to happen, though. The Spurs are the best ran franchise in the league. They have a lot of faith in Walker and won't trade him for a rental of Hill's corpse. The Spurs are only getting older and are a borderline playoff team already, they're not jeopardizing their future for a washed up guard.

First: I agree the Spurs probably would not make that move as advertised - they have a proven history of effectively selecting and developing young talent, so Walker is probably very highly valued there.

That said, I think the salary dump of Gasol is part of the rationale for including Walker in a deal for Hill...along with the obvious PG injuries in SA (Dejounte Murray is done for the year it appears). The deal would open up a bunch of space for SAS this summer.

The key, and I haven't followed the Spurs enough to know, is how valuable of a piece Gasol still is to them at the age of 38.
