Your 2019 Cleveland Indians

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Can we all agree that the fact is that we'll never be a consistent sellout ever again? I mean, if we weren't selling out every game in that 2017 win streak, it'll never happen. We were:
  1. Coming off a WS appearance
  2. Had 2 MVP caliber position players
  3. Had one of the best pitching staffs in the history of the sport
  4. Riding a historic win streak during beautiful weather
That's the perfect storm. If it didn't happen then, it never will. We've dug into this shit pile too many times already. Just accept that until the demographic in the area changes, attendance will always be poor.

And... That's OK. It's a reality we have to deal with, and our front office has done an amazing job dealing with it.

The Indians should be mentioned with the Spurs pre-Kawhi breakup for the best run organizations in sports. Everything within their control is top notch.

Tribe are an original AL franchise but I wouldn’t be the least bit shocked if they move in the next 10 to 15 years, especially if the Dolans sell. I’m convinced one of the Indians or Cavs will be gone. This town can’t sustain three teams.

I'm just not a fan of Jake Bauers. He's been a complete turd. Melky Cabrera would be 5 times better.

Failed acquisition. I'm sure he'll be decent when the window is closed though, much like when he becomes decent when we're losing 7-0.

If they move, it’s going to be to suburban Cleveland.

Not sure what to tell you. This is not the 1990s. We aren't going to average 40K a game. Heck we aren't going to average 30K a game. Did you know that over 50% of MLB teams average under 30K a game? The Indians were averaging a respectable 25K the last couple of seasons. April/May games are always dismal. A WS victory would go a long way, but after 3 WS losses in the last two decades, there is certainly a lot of pessimism built in, and especially after the last 3 years. You may not like it, but that doesn't change the fact that there is Indians fatigue and a lot of fans aren't going to pony up after the recent letdowns. The diehards will show up, but in every sport you need casual fans, and the Tribe has blueballed the casual fan enough that they are just not interested now. Those are the facts. And Browns optimism is running wild right now. Rather back the up and comer than the tired old hat.
This does not get mentioned enough but there has been a brain drain of college graduates from northeast Ohio in the last 25 years who no longer live in the area who would be going to 5 to 10 games a year just because they grew up going to Baseball games in their childhood. There are probably far more casual baseball fans then football and basketball these days. Most of the population lives in the burbs and they don’t go to games at the last minute like the 90s. Honestly, the tribe has done a horrible job of getting season ticket numbers up during the off season. They rely way to much on walk up crowds which won’t happen in April and May. The crowds for June through August until high school college and pro football start up are okay. But yes Cleveland is no longer filled with a huge amount of die hard baseball fans that will attend 10 plus games a year. That is the reality going forward. Casual sports fans with average salaries and families are not going to spend thousands of dollars going to games in the regular season, they will go for playoff games for sure but not a game vs the White Sox in April when it is 35 to 40 degrees.

Now should more fans be attending games ? Sure. But they won’t be averaging 30 thousand any time soon. That is the reality of the cle Akron market. Out of all the people I know from childhood who were sports fans only one person still lives in northeast Ohio. I am sure many of us that live elsewhere have a similar story.
The population in Ohio is getting much older ( look at the voting in the last 8 years) Many of those people in their 60s , 70s plus dont think spending 3.5 hours at a baseball game is worth their their time and money. Their are many factors for that, but they probably have chosen to use that income for travel, and other interests that don’t involve baseball .

They were 8th in the NBA and had a 99.8% capacity on average.
Let’s see what the attendance is like over the next 5 to 10 years without a super star and contending team as ticket prices will have to rise as the salaries of the players do in the NBA.

Pre Lebron the place was half empty on many many nights.

Pre LeBron they were about a 20 win team because Dan Gilbert is completely inept without generational talent.

I’m taking about pre Gilbert. There were two times the team made the playoffs , Kemp era and Bobby Phil’s era that the playoff games did not even sell out. Granted it was only first round, but there were plenty of seats to be had.

Greg Allen and Josh Smith on their way to Cleveland

No word on corresponding moves.

Mercado to DL possibly?

Haase back to AAA makes sense too.

Edit: Haase/Plutko to AAA confirmed.

Good news if Mercado isn’t in need of a trip to the IL.

Wonder if Bobby Bradley is about to get a call soon.

I'm starting to want Luplow and Mercado in the lineup every night. Gives us bats that are at least alive in two OF spots. Do you start them in the corners, with Martin in CF?

If you want to buy at the deadline, you find the best bat you can to replace Martin.

If you want to sell, you move Martin and let Zimmer/Allen play CF

I'm also ready for the Bobby Bradley experiment at the major league level. I'm about done with Jake Bauers.
