2012 Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Guess these guys never watched the games Moreover the advanced stats corroborated what the eyes tell us and now the guy has a chronic knee problem but whatever PJIII is great.

So I'm thinking Waiters is going to start because we just don't have any other options. Resign Gee and he starts too. What about the 4 and 5? Tristan and Andy? Slide Andy to the 4 and start Zeller? I doubt Andy comes off the bench, but you never know.

Kyrie/Waiters/Gee/?/?

Andy starts until...
He's traded at the deadline for '13 lotto pick
Zeller starts from then on out
Cavs get single-digit wins after all-star break
2 lotto picks + Miami/Lakers pick = OK let's win some games now

And I guess you didn't see which team drafted him. Because the team that did clearly is terrible at drafts. Nope, not one of the best FOs in the league...just terrible. They have no idea what they're doing and trusting their pick is just dumb.

They were also in a position where they could afford to take a large risk...so they could have either drafted the "BPA" who probably would have never cracked the rotation, or shoot for a guy who isn't as good now, but could explode and be part of their core.

I go with Varejao at the 4 and Zeller at the 5. I do this for two reasons.

1. It puts Varejao back at his natural position. Hopefully playing back at the PF spot it reduces the chances he has for injuries. This also allows us to hopefully showcase him off for the February trading deadline.

2. I don't think that bringing Thompson off the bench is going to inhibit his maturation. He's still so raw that I don't see it hurting him. Where he is going to benefit is going to be practice. I also think he can play valuable minutes backing up either the PF or C spot. I think putting Zeller next to Varejao will also help Zeller with his adjustment to the NBA game by having a veteran big man with him on the floor.

good quote from the article:
"So even as Waiters' name stayed out of the mainstream news, as the days passed he was in the Cavs' internal headlines. Coach Byron Scott had fallen in love with Waiters' ability after watching plenty of film. As far as Scott was concerned, getting the 6-foot-4 shooting guard would be hitting a jackpot."

this is big for me. to have Byron involved in the process and to have him approve the pick means a lot. I trust Byron's talent evaluation more than anyone. he's been a player and he's been around a long time. Byron knows skill when he sees it.

I have no idea why people are upset about trading the scrub picks that we did (the two seconds) for #17 and Tyler Zeller a top 12 prospect in this draft.

It worries me that they took Waiters because he was the best wing left instead of taking BPA.

It worries me that a reporter for ESPN-Miami is cruising around the Cavs war room.

Don't have a problem with Waiters at 4. It is a risk and it really needs to pay off but after MKG and Beal went 2 & 3 it put the Cavs in a tough spot.
Don't hate Zeller but think the Cavs would have been better off staying at 24,33, & 34. Don't want to hear any NFL/NBA draft comparison. We know it's very different. I also don't see it being a major issue for a team with a talent depleted roster like the Cavs adding 4 rookies.
Watching the draft last night I could see how it was playing out and that there would be good players available at 24, 33 & 34. If I could see it I certainly would hope someone in the Cavs front office could. And it ending up turning out like I thought it would and good prospects were available at those spots.

Not a terrible draft at all and I don't hate it. Just think it could have been better. My fear is that the team being put together could end up being a 1st or 2nd round playoff team at best long term and not a championship contender. Still very early in the building process though so I can't come to any absolute conclusions there. Cavs do still have a very long way to go though and a lot still needs to be added.

Great article and free too. Windy was by far the best Cleveland sports writer until the entertainment network stole him. Makes me think that maybe there is something to the Lequit back to the Cavs in 2014 story.
