Moneyball Comes to Cleveland

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
This hire just strikes me as them wanting an analytics guy and those guys just being rare in the football world, so they had to search elsewhere.

Could be.

Maybe the Browns will be the first NFL team to be successful in hiring a man who has dedicated every waking hour of his career to a sport that isn't the one he was hired for.

Perfect!!!

He meets the two key qualifications to being a successful football executive. Intelligence and being a good guy.

Let's see if we can get Stephen Hawking in there!

Hawking would probably be better than any GM we've had in the past decade. :chuckle:

The Browns deserve every bit of heckling they get, but it sounds like a smart hire.

Every diatribe and twitter rant and post I saw about the Browns was calling for a change from the same old crap. This seems like a massively big change. After this long of a drought, you've gotta swing for the fences.

It's a massively big change like hiring a koala to babysit your human toddler after three consecutive kangaroos let the kid escape from the house.

Continuing their unconventional approach this offseason, Cleveland Brownsowner Jimmy Haslam will announce the hiring of Paul DePodesta of the New York Mets as the Browns' Chief Strategy Officer.

DePodesta -- who helped the Mets become National League Champions last season -- will be above newly hired Executive Vice President of Football Operations Sashi Brown in the organizational hierarchy and will report to Haslem and team president Alec Scheiner, according to sources.

"We are fortunate to bring in Paul, an extremely talented, highly respected sports executive who will add a critical dimension to our front office," said Haslam. "His approach and ambition to find the best pathways for organizational success transcend one specific sport and his experience as a high level sports executive make him a terrific addition to the Cleveland Browns.

"While we are excited about what Paul will provide our organization, we remain fully focused on the critical task of identifying the right head coach and player personnel executive who will provide the football expertise needed to be successful."

The Browns expect that DePodesta will assist members of the team's player development, sports science, high performance and analytics departments maximize their efforts. He will also have a significant voice in determining Browns personnel decisions, including what, if anything, the team does this offseason with former first-round draft pick Johnny Manziel.

Those who have worked with DePodesta during his MLB career describe him as being "off-the-charts intelligent and a great human being.''

Although his success has been achieved in professional baseball, DePodesta has desired opportunities in the NFL.

"Cleveland and football have always held a special place in my heart," said DePodesta. "It was 20 years ago this month, after pursing my first love of football and looking at every possible job in the NFL, that I got the biggest break I could imagine -- a job offer from the American League Champion Cleveland Indians. As excited as I was then, I am even more excited now to return to Cleveland and to try to help the Browns."

Have no choice but to accept this and give them a fair shot but man they are making some unconventional moves. I just hope with all this strategic thinking they didn't strategize themselves out of good HC and GM candidates

Great move. It's nice to see the Browns on the cutting edge instead of trying to ride Belichick's coattails or run Bill Walsh's WCO from 1988. Watch A Football Life: Paul Brown, we used to be at the forefront of innovation. I am typically down on Asslam, but this hire has me excited.

I like it because I'm pretty sure no analytics exist to support drafting Johnny Manziel round 1

And I know very few intelligent people who liked the pick. So at least we won't repeat anything like that!
Depends on how much they analyze Moxie.

Where is this from? It starts off like a press release but I can't imagine they would call out Johnny's future in one of those?
