You could sign-and-trade one of Kyrie or Kevin Love to OKC, or do a 3-team deal. We'd be under a hard-cap for the year, but, you could do it.

The problem with such a scenario is that you've somehow got to convince Durant that Cleveland is a better option than Golden State and/or Washington and/or Los Angeles (or wherever). And I just don't see a compelling argument that can be made there. If he doesn't want to play in Steph's shadow, why would he play in LeBron's? And if he wants to build his own team, why go to either GSW or CLE?

It's not that we don't have the assets, I think we do, it's that he just wouldn't come to Cleveland over the alternatives.

I could see it as kind of a Wade-LeBron-in-2010 type of deal. I wonder about the implications of such a move though. Wouldn't they have to let go of all pending free agents and only be able to use vet minimums? I may be wrong on that though.

Cavs can make a sign and trade so long as they end up under next years apron. Once they do, they're stuck with a hard cap with no exceptions (no MLE, for instance) until the end of the season.

Off the top of my head, and AFAIK, the 2016-17 NBA salary could be $90M? So that could entail a tax line as high as $109M, with the apron set at $113M. So the Cavaliers, after trading say Kevin Love for Kevin Durant, would need to stay under $113M for the season.

In sign and trades, can the team receiving the FA ship out multiple pieces? I'm pretty sure the team sending out the player can't send any additional players/pieces with him, but is it possible for example to send out Love+Shumpert for KD? Not even sure that would work salary cap wise or if OKC would want Shumpert, but just for theoretically speaking?

I'm pretty sure the only restriction on the deal is that the Cavs end up below the apron, which is $4M above the tax line. Even if you could only trade 1-for-1, you could just do separate trades to move the pieces and make it work for OKC. But honestly, I'm not sure where they'd get off demanding anything in such a deal given Durant would be leaving regardless.

Hasn't stopped Griffin from overpaying before.

Well, it would be more to clear cap for us in this case. Not sure what the new max is for KD, but could it be about 30 million a year? Kev will be making like 21 mil, so we would almost have to send out Shump.

With the new salary cap spikes, we should have some decent flexibility because Kyrie and Kev are on great contracts. Warriors have better flexibility and people on even better contracts though.

JR and Delly have earned themselves like 10+ mil a year though so I don't know.

Pull a LeBron and keep signing one year deals with OKC from here on out. And then once Seattle returns, sign a massive deal with them and end his career there.

Kevin Durant is a 9-year veteran, so his max contract value is $24.9M, with 7.5% raises from the Thunder, and 4.5% raises from anyone else. At least, AFAIK... The Thunder can also offer an additional year.

I don't think Durant is looking for a truly max contract though; instead, I think he wants a max 2+1(PO) year deal allowing him to opt-out and sign a full max after his 10th year and under the new $108M+ CBA. He'd be insane to pursue a long-term deal now.

So Kevin Love's salary would be $21.17M, and Kevin Durant's would be $24.9, a difference of 117%; so the trade works straight-up, but we'd have to end up below the apron, which I think is more than doable.

I'm all for keeping the band together if we win. The question is, what if we don't?

It's better to address all of that after the playoffs, but, The Cavs have two superstar-talents under great team-friendly contracts. We have assets to radically change the face of this team.

With that said, I'm the biggest Kyrie fan on the board, but if you told me I could trade him for Kevin Durant, I wouldn't think twice about it. Same goes for Love.

Thanks for that info. Great post. And I agree all the way.

I smell a blockbuster....:cha (20):

While I love the thought of KD on this team; I see no reason for OKC to do this. Hell theyd even be better to just let him walk. Its better to hit the bottom and bounce bank over being the treadmill team they would with Westbrook & KD.

Getting Durant only works if LeBron agrees to play the 4 long term.
If he does that...and lands KD...I will personally drive down to Bath and take one for the team.

Whose the point guard for this duo? Kyrie or CP3? :celb (13):

If people dislike Kyrie's ISOs and over-dribbling on this forum I can't imagine what would happen with KD. I honestly think Durant is an overrated player who has one skill that he is arguably the best at: scoring. He is absolutely top-5, but frankly, I don't think his skillset is conducive to winning a championship.

A one-two punch of LeBron-KD reminds me of a slightly supped-up Westbrook-KD. I would do the trade if we don't win it all, but honestly, I don't think it would give us the extra edge needed to beat the Warriors/Spurs. It would improve the team, but not by as much as many make it out to seem.
