Johnny Manziel domestic violence case goes to Dallas grand jury Thursday

Dallas police did not charge Manziel after a three-week investigation into whether he should be charged with domestic violence in an alleged attack on his ex-girlfriend.

The grand jury will decide whether there is evidence to indict him on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge.

The former Aggies star is accused of kidnapping, hitting and threatening to kill Colleen Crowley last month.

Prosecutors review grand jury referrals before presenting them to the grand jury.

What is a grand jury referral?

Grand jurors determine whether there is enough information to believe that a crime might have occurred. They can indict or decline to indict — what is commonly called a “no bill.”

If Manziel is not indicted, no further criminal action will be taken. No bills from police referrals aren’t typically made public like other cases in which a grand jury decides not to indict. But given the publicity surrounding the Manziel case, the results would probably be made public.

An indictment means an arrest warrant is issued. Then the case moves into the courtroom and would proceed to a trial or a plea deal. Or the charge could be dismissed.

The accusation

Manziel, 23, is accused of abusing Crowley in a fight over another woman Jan. 29 at Hotel ZaZa in Uptown. Crowley and Manziel broke up in December after dating for two years and living together in Cleveland. She said she saw him that night in January when he invited her to his hotel room to talk.



Manziel has spent time in Dallas recently training.

Crowley, also 23, told police that Manziel slapped her in the head and ruptured her left eardrum, causing her to lose her hearing.

Crowley said Manziel hit her, dragged her by the hair, forced her into a car and drove her to Fort Worth, where she lives.

Dallas police opened an investigation into Manziel on Feb. 5, a day after Crowley alleged in a Fort Worth police report that he had hit her at the Uptown hotel.

The department initially investigated the allegations and didn’t file a criminal complaint but later reopened the investigation. Police officials said investigators were interviewing witnesses who were at the hotel and reviewing a video from the hotel.

Manziel is still looking for a job after being released by Cleveland last month.

The Cowboys have said they have no interest in him. He’s been rumored as a possibility in Denver.
