The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread (includes spoilers)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I don't think Jorah belongs anywhere near that high. He seems to be a passable swordsman but nothing special.

Brienne is probably number one at this point.

Jaime does't even belong on the list without his hand.
And Bronn not really a great swordsman. Competent, but survives more on dirty tricks and typical sellsword tactics.

I'm a sucker for Mormont so I may have slight bias.

However I still think Jamie has a shot of being the best still left in Westeros. He has yet to be tested by a high skill opponent with his off hand. His skills and instincts are obviously still there. Not being able to use his right at all may have ended up helping in the long run as he may be highly skilled with the left by now.

All Jaime has done since losing his hand is get his shit pushed in by Bronn and get lucky in a fight with a Dornish guy.

Which was early on when he hadn't had much training with the off hand yet.

A lot of time has passed since those events.

Lord freindzone has one advantage STONE ARMS! I would agree brienne and the hound are probably the most dangerous swords alive

Not sure if the Hound is actually a good swordsman, or just brutally strong.

Not sure if we count the Mountain, but he was obviously very formidable as well. And Oberyn would be up there as well if he were alive, because he beat the Mountain in single combat.

Loras is another guy who would probably be top five if he hadn't just died at the end of last season.

Of the people still alive, I'd think Jon Snow would have to be in the conversation on the show at least. We've seen him win some pretty tough fights with some pretty formidable foes. Book Jon doesn't really have that, but it seems like we're talking the show here.

Daario Naharis should probably be on the list as well. We've mostly only seen him kick ass when he's needed to.

If we start talking books, I think it'd be:

Brienne
Loras
The Hound
Mance
Barristan

Don't really know who would be the fifth.* I put Mance on there because he pretty effortlessly beat the shit out of Jon Snow in the practice yard, and he had to beat a lot of great wildling warriors to become King in the first place. He's also, as far as we know, still alive in the books. The Hound, given what we now know, is almost certainly alive as well, and basically all of us suspected it anyway. Same goes for Loras. Reports are he is brutally injured, but we don't know that for sure yet.

*Edited the post to add in motherfucking Barristan Selmy. Dude's probably still one of the best swordsmen in the book world.

I doubt you end up guarding the heir to the throne full time if you're not a pretty great swordsman. We've seen him beat Beric and he went pretty 1:1 with Brienne.

I have been wondering about this. Has he actually gotten any better?

agreed that's why i cheated and went with dangerous :) i mean the fact that beric cant be killed gives him a distinct advantage in some situations

Well, he can be killed. He can just be brought back to life. Of course, you kill Thoros too and there's no one to revive him.

Not Oberyn - he used a spear, not a sword.

Don't forget in the books the great and famed "Dark Star" is still alive, unfortunately.

If George could go back and edit anything out of the books, I bet this loser would be near the top of the list.

As far as the show, isn't Greyworm the best warrior we've seen still alive and in Westeros now?

The nights King is the best swordsman
