That jab of his really is vicious man. GGG hits like a truck altogether. I was watching a sports science on him and the power he generates in his hooks and straight right hands is equivalent to two weight classes above his middleweight class.Really hoping GGG still has a lot left in the tank. Stylistically he's probably my favorite fighter ever, just so precise and technical with fight ending power in each punch he throws.
After listening to a bunch of pods about this, they make a good point that the only thing that's given GGG problems is when he's up against a fighter with good movement. That's not Canelo at all, so I'm hoping GGG can back him down with that piston jab and unload power shots when he's against the ropes.
I'm really hoping for a mid to late round GGG KO, but I wouldn't say I'm very confident about that.
For me, I judge a guy's power not by how badly he can hurt guys when he loads up and lands flush, but how he can hurt guys with short punches or punches that don't look like they should do much damage. That jab of his really is vicious man. He's taken some really clean hard shots his last two fights that didn't even look like it fazed him. Yeah, I actually looked up if he's ever been hurt in a fight because i've never seen it.For me, I judge a guy's power not by how badly he can hurt guys when he loads up and lands flush, but how he can hurt guys with short punches or punches that don't look like they should do much damage.
GGG has been knocking guys out cold from glancing shots and making them wobbly off his jab for years. He also has maybe the best chin in boxing, I don't think he's ever been hurt on a shot to the chin.
I think I'll be looking for big shots in the first few rounds vey closely. Whoever lands the first big blow could dictate the pace of the fight. Canelo could force GGG to respect his power and slow down his stalking, while GGG could start to get Canelo to start covering up and slowing down on the counter shots.
Just an A+ fight overall on paper, I could see all outcomes happening on fight night.
Another good point I've heard is that GGG isn't the type to slip a shot and counter, he's much more comfortable sitting back in a high guard until you end your combination, then unloads with a combo of his own. I don't think Canelo has the foot speed that Jacobs and Brook did where they can get in and out before GGG can fire back. He's taken some really clean hard shots his last two fights that didn't even look like it fazed him. He truly has otherworldly punching power at his weight class. You're right, just about anybody can knock a dude out on a fully loaded punch that hits someone flush to the chin. It's really hard to land those shots though, and you're right, he lands these seemingly innocent punches that just drops guys like potato sacks.
It's really unfortunate that they looked to delay the fight until GGG looked vulnerable. Would they have been eager to book this fight before he looked human in his last couple of fights? I'm not so sure. I think the plan all along was to let him age a bit because they knew he wasn't going to get better while Canelo was going to improve because he hadn't hit his prime yet.Another good point I've heard is that GGG isn't the type to slip a shot and counter, he's much more comfortable sitting back in a high guard until you end your combination, then unloads with a combo of his own. The age thing is just the biggest question to me. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit concerned. I can understand it when GGG said he wasn't really that focused and approached the camp and fight with a bit of boredom, but regardless he looked a bit off in both. The precision was just a bit off and he wasn't able to time guys like he usually does, not to mention being very easy to hit. No doubt in my mind that the GGG of 3-4 years ago KOs Canelo somewhere inside 8.
