I'm sort of not getting that....are we talking about posts that "their side" believe are funny/enjoyable, even if they're not advancing the discussion?

I mean, this stuff is supposed to be fun at some level, right? If something amuses one group, shouldn't the others just kind of...get over it?

The argument always is over "who started it", which ultimately shouldn't matter because either had the opportunity to simply walk away/ignore at any point, but chose not to do so.
 
This is never going to work. Some people just won't be able to help themselves. The only way this would ever work is to nominate the few level headed posters like @King Stannis @gourimoko and @The Human Q-Tip to have a civil debate that others could read-only. I won't even include myself as I am a foot solider who can't help but throw barbs. It's in my nature.

So I mostly lurk the political threads and very rarely contribute, but based on my lurking I think the quoted is such an overwhelmingly likely scenario to occur. Someone else mentioned decay rate taking over and that is what I think will result. I think there will be a short period where everyone tries really hard to be civil and then it will divulge and either people will get banned by the half dozen or it will just go back to toxic

We're talking about posters mashing disagree on posts that they don't even disagree with just to troll or try to get under people's skin. It's unnecessary and does nothing to improve the quality of the discussion.

Oh hell no. @gourimoko and I are toxic about 50% of the time. Our saving grace is that we (generally) don't blow up the forum over it. Plus, I have absolutely zero interest in being any kind of "representative" for any particular POV.

Yeah, I guess I just don't understand why anyone cares about getting "disagrees" If someone doing that gets under someone's skin, then just grow the fuck up.

Well, uh, other than in paranoid fantasy, i see very little likelihood that conservatives and progressives are going to align to ban other people. They may disagree with someone, but I don't see a ban as being remotely likely, simply because so many people are unlikely to care about most outlier views anyway.

Why can't the people doing it grow up? It's just unnecessary and the threads will continue to suck if it continues. It's hard to ignore a particular poster when they're doing it on every single post without ever attempting to engage in discussion.
 
Threads don't sound all that enticing to participate in. I could volunteer at a preschool cafeteria if that's what I wanted to subject myself to

Eh...if possible, I'd prefer quality over quantity in this new forum.

We will see. I agree YOU wouldn't, but you also weren't the one spam reporting people

I have very very little faith anything changes at all because there were so many warnings and bans (even very long bans) while it was on this board and changes were always temporary

Regardless I'd like to continue lurking and hope it works out because I actually do learn a lot and my perspectives on some issues have amazingly changed due to this board but I just think there are deeply engrained personal issues between prominent posters at this point and it's only a matter of time before they resurface. I hope not but it's just hard to believe "this time will be different"

It hasn't even been decided whether the moderation will be light or heavy at this point, so that's probably premature. I suppose there will be a vote or something in a day or so to see which model people prefer.
