Cleveland Indians 2018-2019 Offseason Outlook

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I could see him beating out Naquin, who hasn't been a positive contributor since mid-summer 2016

If he beats out Naquin, that means Naquin is pretty much done in the Indians uniform. I cannot see us keeping Naquin if someone like Joyce beats him out.

Indians Twitter hates it, because Indians Twitter hates everything.

I get we haven't done a ton this off season, but honestly we did get a lot younger with guys we have control over long term. I still feel we need a Marwin type of player, either free agency or trade but thats life

I don't disagree. Naquin has had ample opportunities, and I don't think the organization is married to the idea of having him on the roster.

I can't envision both guys making the team with the state of the rest of the OF

I still don't like going into the season with only Luplow, our catchers and our utility guy being the only true RH bats on the roster at the moment. We need a few veteran RH bats to try and make the roster I feel, we shall see in due time since the minor league signings should be plentiful here soon.

Lindor, Jose, and Santana have all been historically just as good (Lindor much better) hitting RH than LH

It would be nice to add an OF that can hit lefties, because I'm not sure if anyone out there can.

Not sure if you mean them personally hitting RH, or them hitting against RH, but it can't hurt to add some numbers to the discussion.

Lindor has far better numbers against lefties than righties while Santana and Ramirez are pretty balanced.

Lindor:
vs RHP .277/.340/.476
vs LHP .314/.370/.509

Santana
vs RHP .234/.357/.443
vs LHP .272/.376/.439

Ramirez
vs RHP .282/.363/.496
vs LHP .289/.345/.468

Not that any of those guys would sit for a platoon, but Lindor actually has far better numbers against lefties than righties while Santana and Ramirez are pretty balanced.

Yup, I meant Lindor is better hitting right handed (vs. LHP). Was essentially saying we have 3 good right handed bats already, they just don't hit from that side exclusively.

Greg Allen's splits were much better vs. RHP (.267 / .322 / .369) than vs. LHP (.208 / .255 / .229) last season.

However, he fared much better in the minors vs. LHP (AA and AAA numbers, 158 AB): .373 / .418 / .481

Lindor is out for the next 7-9 weeks with a calf strain.

In related news: the 480 bridge is currently backed up with pedestrian traffic .

Well that means Chang, Moroff and Stamets will get a lot of early playing time this spring. Good chance for the utility guy to win his spot at the moment

This isn't a small deal for Lindor and the Indians. A 9 week timeline brings him back around April 12th, but injuries like this can linger, and they'll have the cold Cleveland weather to contend with early on. The lineup with him is not great and without? Yeesh.

Just a guess, but:

LF-S-Greg Allen
2B-L-Jason Kipnis
3B-S-Jose Ramirez
DH-S-Carlos Santana
1B-L-Jake Bauers
RF-P-Tyler Naquin or Matt Joyce/Jordan Luplow
SS-R-Yu Chang
CF-L-Leonys Martin
R-C-Roberto Perez

I'm fully expecting 2nd and 3rd DL stints because calf injuries are annoying to deal with for athletes. Go ask Lonnie.

I'm far more worried about the possibility of the injury lingering all year than I am about him potentially missing games to start the season.

Hopefully they take their time. I believe they will.

I'd even be ok with sitting him all of April, and allowing him get a full rehab assignment if necessary.

I absolutely expect both of them to be on the opening day roster if no other outfielder is signed. The outfield is likely going to start the season with Martin, Allen, Naquin, Luplow and now Joyce.
