Sure but his HS and EYBL stuff is tracked too and they're similarly worrisome.

Young players can improve but that is just the big red flag with him. I believe he has the twitch to create space and score.....he looks like he has off dribble promise.....but if he can't pass at a league average level for a PG, his ceiling is just not very good relative to where he was drafted IMO.....and I honestly think his floor is pretty low too without that skill. Sexton's passing was questionable but at 8, a good starter is a huge win. In the top 5, your All-Star odds are just exponentially higher on a pick basis. There's a world where he can be a good player but I think people are really getting ahead of themselves with him. He has a few really glaring weaknesses and unknowns, more than any top 5 PG in some time (that didn't have insane athletic gifts to lean on).

Career NBA AST averages

Curry - 6.6
Lonzo - 6,4
Lillard - 6.3
Irving - 5.7

People are probably surprised to see Kyrie's number that high but that is my point. Most would consider him a ho-hum passer and he's still churning out nearly 6 AST a game as a scoring guard. That league average bar is pretty high at the PG level, even for non elite distributors. That's just where I am uneasy about Garland. He can mitigate one of two ways.....by becoming a better passer or plus defender.
I'm almost certain it wont be as a defender. Very few guys under 6'3" become players that make a positive impact on defense. It will have to be passing undoubtedly.

Totally on board with this pick. The really cool thing is we actually have a real coach now that can develop these guys. I mean Sex is what 20? Nice to have some new faces around.

The one thing that does stand out, as a huge positive to me, is mechanically speaking........he looks significantly better at Vandy than these videos. So that should be encouraging if you like him as a shooter. Probably a sign of him maturing physically and getting in to a more rigorous athletic training program.....but his shot is just a lot more effortless now, looking at videos 12-18 months apart.

Not even intimating it is bad in any of these HS videos, just that everything looks better in his shot analysis, in his limited film at Vandy. More lift, tighter mechanics, a bit more compact. He doesn't have to load as much from his waist, which again, is a sign he's just getting stronger.

I'd really like to get an official updated physical profile on Garland. His HS coach says he's 6'3(in shoes)/190 now. Seemed like an oddly specific fact to know, so while it could be blowing smoke I tend to believe it at least in part.

Seems like he did have a lot of late-ish physical growth compared to a lot of other kids that age. If his physical profile baseline coming into the league is 6'3/190, does that drastically change your projections of him?

Garland won't play in the summer league.
Cavs being super careful. But he will be with the team. Hope they let him scrimmage with the team in practices.
Then they won't have to worry about somebody taking a shot at him.

For those that haven't watched film beyond 4 games on college ball with Garland, he is a very good passer. Not quite Ja Morant level, but he has good court vision. Not sure why he didn't display it in the 4.5 games he played in college, maybe his coach wanted him to score, but unfortunately you have to watch his high school highlights because he has so little college.

Garland is the better pg prospect than Sexton, even now after Sexton had a good rookie year. This isn't an insult to Sexton, I like his game allot, its just a fact, Garland could become elite.

That said, I have been beating the Sexton is a combo guard or shooting guard drum for 6 months. We will run a two pg offense....just like last year with Brevin Knight.

Also, Garland is the only player outside of the top 3 that some scouts had as a top 3, so it was a good value pick at 5. Smart move, hopefully it works out.

If the Sixers had drafted him he'd be redshirted a year.

Sixers had to ensure the tank man. Thats why they either took busts or red shirt players year after year. Sam Hinikie died for them to be a 2nd round exit.

He's got a weird/distant look in his eyes most of the time. Just sayin'.

He definitely chases his shot first and who can blame him? He's clearly much better than most of the teams he faced and has a money jumper. Super comfy on the pull-ups and will kill teams if they go under screens. He moves like as if he isn't dribbling, the ball is an extension of him, a very good sign too. Very reminiscent of a recent Cavs PG. Biggest difference is #2 could be the greatest finishing PG of all time.

Nothing wrong with a score first PG. You need guys who can create their own shot in the playoffs (not that that's happening anytime soon) and ISO is important in crunch time.

Time will tell if he has tunnel vision at NBA speeds.
