2019 Draft, Pick #30 - Kevin Porter Jr., USC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I know some of you are very high on KPJ including the Cavs, but I just keep seeing a player like JR Smith who just never get out of the bonehead realm. That said, 30th pick equals JR Smith, you take it, but I feel he will never fully mature.

Can anyone give me an example of a bone head who did mature to become a fringe all star?

I couldn't find what he exactly did at USC that got him suspended. From the articles I read, he seems like a good kid from a bad neighborhood. Jamal Crawford has been his mentor for years.

JR helped CAVS win first Cleveland title in 50 years

I think there are a lot of 19 year olds that mature. Smith was 19 as well, so we'll just have to see if he gets better. With JR, that didn't happen. But he still has a chance at 19.

Some become All Stars in spite of being blockheads.
Allen Iverson
Shawn Kemp
Kyrie
Rodman
Melo

Kyrie is a different type of blockhead, and Melo doesn't work for me because I hate his game.

I will give you the others for sure.

How about Zach Randolph?

Probably the best example, because Iverson really has number 1 overall talent, but Zach had top 5-10 talent and was a complete bonehead for a long time until he matured.

PS, I just realized I said a number 1 overall pick had number 1 overall talent, lmao...I am an idot, but i stand by the fact Iverson was insanely talented so doesnt really count for bonehead turning around because the talent was another level.

Reminds me of Jr Smith.

Laziest comp for Kevin Porter Jr. is JR Smith. Mentality wise maybe. But play style not at all. JR Smith was a catch and shoot player from day 1. KPJ has zero off the ball game as things stand right now. KPJ is a gritty man to man defender. JR Smith was never anything more then a defender who tried to get steals. JR Smith later in his career would try on defense but was never the gritty type of defender KPJ was at USC. Completely underrated part of KPJ's game. So if the comparison is in terms of mentality or athletically sure. If its play style it doesn't fit at all.

So Larry Hughes? Ron Harper? Ricky Davis?

Ricky Davis is some what interesting for KPJ as a comp. Mentally and Game style wise. But I really hate comps when a kid just gets drafted. Yes KPJ had a tough childhood and made mistakes at USC. But did he have issues in High School? Serious question I don't know if he did. I don't ever see KPJ shooting at his own bucket to secure the Triple Double though.

Best Case - He has Harden in his game as a offensive talent
Worst Case - He's JR Smith as he matures and you need to use bench/coach/lockerroom to keep him in line. Highs are really high and he can win games for you and potentially score 50 in his prime when he's on, but he when he's off, he could potentially derail a whole season OR lose a finals game for you if you depend on him.

I like to think Coach B and staff can maximize him. I'm grateful as hell for the chance to watch him try. For where he was drafted, even taking the chance on him is a win-win for us

Again JR Smith is a terrible comp. He literally has ZERO off the ball game. JR Smith made his career as a catch and shoot lighting bolt off the bench. In terms of ups and downs that could be similar. But it won't look anything like JR Smith scoring 50. Such a lazy comp man. Like in the other thread where someone said comparing Windler to a white guy just cause hes white, comparing KPJ to a guy with "attitude issues" just cause he has "attitude issues" is lazy.

Here's my question...is KPJ a guy who could eventually be an accurate shooter on those step backs he loves? Or is he just a guy who loves stepbacks? Given his questionable mechanics and very poor midrange/free throw shooting, I tend to think his 40% 3-point shooting is probably a mirage. And he seems like a guy who hurts his team a lot when his shot's not falling.
