2019 MLB Trade Deadline

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
22 Home runs...…….60+ RBI in Cinci………...come on man.

These things aren’t very important to me.

96 wRC+, .323 wOBA, 0.8 WAR

That’s league average.

"aren’t very important to me" Most important words in your post. Whats important to the Indians is what matters. Not you, not me..... You can see it in these guys eyes......The morale of this team has sky-rocketed within 24 hours. They believe..........

What he’s saying is that HR and RBI aren’t that useful when determining who is a good hitter, and he’s right.

Coyote, if you want to make an argument for Puig, bring up his career averages. Bring up how good of a hitter he's been since June 1. Bring up stats that matter. There's a really good argument why Puig is going to be a huge addition to this lineup, especially when you compare him to Jake Bauers or Greg Allen who he'll be replacing.

I don't believe that you know anything about the "morale" inside the clubhouse. I think people are sad to see Trevor go, but excited for Franmil #1, and Puig a distant #2.

RBI's don't matter to anyone except the casual fan still living in the 80's and is too stubborn to learn or grow. I can guarantee you that our front office wasn't trading for anyone based off how many RBI's they had.

Just to see if I am off base....so to speak...….So for example if a hitter hits .317, has 126 RBI, and 50 home runs...……..is he a good hitter?

Yeah, because he's likely getting on base at a 38% clip or higher while slugging over .600

RBI is a pretty meaningless stat though. At least you can infer a few things from BA% and HR.

Most likely.

But batting average isn't as important as something like OBP, or OPS. RBI's are completely meaningless. Home Runs will result in a high slugging and therefore OPS, and they give you a better idea of what a hitter is doing.

If you want just a single, simple old-school number, OPS is really good. WAR is the best single number for modern stats. Getting into things like K%, BB%, exit velocity, barrels, hard hit %, FB/GB% etc all help you see what a batter is doing.

Of course, if you hit .317 and smoke 50 home runs, then your OPS is very likely north of 1.000 as long as you literally draw a walk like once a week. Anytime you post an OPS north of 1.000, you're likely an MVP candidate.

I like the long ball, and I use it more than most when evaluating players.

RBI's are bit more dodgy though. You need to actually have people that don't suck in front of you to be on base and score for you. If you're a cleanup hitter on a shitty team like the Marlins, you could have a great year and still only have 65-70 RBIs because nobody in front of you is getting on for you to knock in.

I'd argue that RBI's are relatively useless outside of maybe helping show you how clutch guys can be with runners on, but average and OPS w/ RISP is a better stat to help determine clutchness.

Ok just wanted to be sure. Those are Albert Belles stats in 1995...……. guess he was just an average hitter, who's RBI and average did not matter.

This is an argument for another day, but I don't believe in clutchness

Please distinguish b/w me and @Coyote850. Wouldn't want my rep to drag his down. :)

I'm not sure if you're arguing that we should pay him next year or not, but if so, he's going to be looking for $12 million or more, I'd imagine. No one's saying he's not a good hitter. But that $12million is better spent elsewhere. Lindor, for example.

You know what's hilarious?

If you were willing to put in the work to understand advanced stats, you might actually appreciate Belle more than quoting "RBIs"

Who the hell said that?

"But batting average isn't as important as something like OBP, or OPS. RBI's are completely meaningless." Out of the Rafters said that. One of the dumbest things I have ever seen posted in a baseball forum. RBIs are the most important stat there is. Runs Batted in = Runs scored........Maybe I'm getting senile........and don't get what you guys mean............
