2024 Guardians Regular Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
The issues with Bauer and the Guardians specifically have nothing to do with his alleged conduct against women.

But trust me, they would never have him in this clubhouse again. Even with Francona no longer the manager.

I get that he was a talented pitcher at one time and may very well still be one, but it won’t be in Cleveland and the sexual misconduct allegations won’t be the reason why like they will be for a bunch of other clubs.
If that's true then it's unfortunate.

What kind is that? Many thought that our beloved Cookie was an asshole too. I'd be concerned with who Trevor Bauer is today and not what he was 5 yrs ago. I'm not sure how they would go about deciphering that information though. I'd guess face to face conversations need to happen and an understanding had. Talking with teammates could be useful too. Honestly, I think his ability and knowledge could be very useful.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for someone like Mookie Betts and I'll take his opinion of Trevor over an ill informed poster on a random board. That includes all of us including me so don't take/make it personal.
Sorry was a bad joke about the kind of relationship that Trevor gets himself into.

I'm not a fan of his ways though, and not about to let other men tell me about his misogynistic ways.

I actually think he's probably fine as a baseball teammate but signing him is kind of implicitly endorsing him and I'd rather look elsewhere.

Wasn't a bad joke and sorry for not getting it initially. I like bad jokes!

Please don't mistake this as argumentative KS because I'm not sure how or what to think about Trever if I'm being honest. What are his ways? Is he a pervert or did he fall into a trap. Maybe both? I think that to this point it is proven that there was no criminal behavior and in fact there is ample evidence that suggests the women accusing him are guilty of crimes of their own. I will say that Trevor is responsible for allowing himself to be in that kind of situation so I'm not trying to deflect. We lay in the bed that we make. The question I have relates more to how it has changed him if it has at all. I work in the chemical/petroleum product industry and I liken the idea of Bauer to those guys in this industry that did something stupid, ignored safety protocal and totally fucked themselves up and are now travelling around giving safety conferences. There are no profound messages like listening to a disfigured dude telling you how wearing your fire retardent clothing properly could prevent you from looking like him.

The Athletic asked 40 MLB executives:

What are the Top 10 front offices in MLB?

No. 4 — Cleveland Guardians

Total points: 101
First-place votes: 2

President of baseball operations: Chris Antonetti

At the top, there is stability. Chris Antonetti, the president of baseball operations, has worked for Cleveland since 1999. General manager Mike Chernoff joined as an intern in 2003. The list of prominent executives to spend time in Cleveland in the interim is impressive, a group that includes Derek Falvey of the Minnesota Twins, David Stearns of the New York Mets and Carter Hawkins of the Chicago Cubs.

The Guardians face a set of challenges. Owner Paul Dolan tends not to spend much. The team has drawn more than two million fans to Progressive Field just once since 2009. Cleveland is not exactly a bustling coastal metropolis (though there are many excellent restaurants near the ballpark). “Just look at the market they’re in,” one executive said. “And look at what they’ve done over the last 15 years, how much they’ve won. It’s pretty remarkable.”

Cleveland’s primary baseball product has been pitchers, a lineage stretching from Corey Kluber to Shane Bieber to Emmanuel Clase. The front office tends to target arms with upside in trades and maximize them at the big-league level.

“They know what they’re good at, and they’re very consistent at being who they are,” one executive said.

I don't care either way, but I have to ask why? Many were quick to get on the bandwagon that condemmed Bauer and rightfully so, but now that the truth has come to light why are those same people not quick to realize what happened to him and backpedal a bit?

I doubt Trevor is the same stupid kid he was when he was here in Cleveland so I don't think the idea of bringing him back should be totally shitcanned. Also, I can see him having a much better realationship with Vogt than he had with Tito.

It's an interesting dynamic and we sure could use him in the rotation. I wish that wasn't the case and the idea is certainly tarnished to say the least, but I think this team is ready and adding Bauer would/could be game changing.
I think maybe you quoted the wrong person.

@thestatman is making the insane claim that Tito distributed playing time based on players' salary. That's what I assumed was an unserious post.

In any normal world we'd acknowledge that Bauer is a clubhouse cancer who nobody wants for a myriad of reasons.

Putting up gaudy numbers in a league that nobody knew existed. Which is probably where he belongs.

I get that he was a talented pitcher at one time and may very well still be one, but if he is ever able to make it back to the majors, it won’t be in Cleveland. I’d bet my life savings on that.

And the sexual misconduct allegations won’t be the primary reason why like they are for a bunch of other clubs.
Doubling down on this:

1. The Bauer / Mr. Fucking Sunshine / Calloway trio's conduct towards women
2. Chipping his finger off during the W.S.
3. Fracturing the clubhouse (believe Bimbo mentioned this a while back)
4. Throwing a fastball into the stands

I'm sure there are many more

Gavin Williams is being shut down and given a cortizone shot in his elbow after experiencing a reoccurance of his pain after throwing 50 pitches. My guess is this goes on for a couple of months and they finally throw in the towel and have surgery.

Or do rest, rehab, give it a shot, shut it down, and repeat all year and get the surgery next spring like Bieber.

The elbow was originally injured when he was working with weighted balls. This guy already throws in the high 90's - why is he working with weighted balls?

My guess is his elbow was already about to go and if it wasn't the weighted balls it would have happened when he was pitching. I'll be surprised if he pitches any innings this year. It seems like once a pitcher develops an arm problem it's there until it gets fixed with surgery. Maybe McKenzie will be the exception.

I agree with a lot of what you say but the one elephant in the room is a lot of this rests on Bauer admitting he effed up and he's one of the last people in the world to do that.

At best he is stubbornly naive, like some moron who reads redpiller forums and then meets the real world and can't accept it.

From a purely baseball perspective, you tell the staff members that still grind an axe with Bauer to suck it up and you sign him. But from an overall perspective, you can't in any way bring him back. His situation never got resolved or went away, it just went quiet. Marrying one of your enablers doesn't fix it. He still can't control himself in front of the cameras, he still runs his mouth publicly against his accusers, MLB had more than just the 4 accusers talk to them, and if he would make it back, the whole situation would rip right back open. Plus let's just play devil's advocate; you sign Bauer, he pitches like an ace, this team is a Cinderella and they take it all the way. You don't see Bauer becoming emboldened and running his mouth then? This whole situation has been turned up several degrees by how he has handled it, which is terribly.
