Here's a great play from today's game:

  • Mitchell is still not moving real well. There’s little explosiveness and lift in his game as it stands. Mitchell is a shell of himself right now. He can still be effective, and showed tonight, but anything inside the paint is essentially off limits. He was 2-for-5 inside the restricted area for the game.
  • Mitchell was responsible for the 17 of the Cavs first 20 points. The Cavs struggled to find much footing outside of him early.
  • However, when Mitchell went to the bench the Cavs proceeded to go on a 9-0 run. Mitchell went to bench with Cavs down 9 – proceeded to go on 9-0 run. JB Bickerstaff was urging the Cavs to push it with any opportunity they got. While the Cavs first quarter pace was 92, Georges Niang, Caris LeVert and Isaac Okoro all had pace numbers over 101 for the quarter.
  • Ironically enough, the Cavs standard second unit lineup was the Cavs best 5-man lineup of the game: Evan Mobley + Niang + LeVert + Okoro + Darius Garland were a +15 in just over ten minutes.

The Cavs played like crap until the middle of the 3rd quarter. Part of it was LaRavia having a career night shooting 3's. He came in shooting 29.7% from deep and hit 8-of-11. Ridiculous. This game should not have been this close but LaRavia scored 32.

At least Mitchell scored 29 points with 8 assists and 3 steals. He's working his way back to looking something like his former self.

Allen and Mobley did a great job defending the rim. The Grizzlies were 19-for-52 (36.5%) on 2-point shots and 44% on 3's.

At halftime the Cavs were 8-for-23 in the paint. Allen and Mobley had a tough time finishing as they were swarmed every time they touched the ball. It seemed like Allen got stripped a lot; as soon as he touched the ball he was swarmed and hacked from all sides until the ball came out. The refs never called a foul.

With 5:20 to go in the 3rd quarter the scored was tied at 59. The Cavs finished on a 19-8 run as LeVert, Garland, and Okoro finally got going offensively. Garland missed his first seven 3's before finally connecting on a couple. Okoro was 2-for-6 on free throws. WTF?

Nice to see Lamar Stevens is still in the league. Nice to see he's starting, because if their normal unit of Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr, Bane, Smart, Kennard, et al had been available the Cavs would have lost by 40.

Since this game sucks and you’re talking soft rock Beatles gems, ever hear of a band called the Cactus Blossoms? Knew of their existence from an appearance as a Roadhouse band in one of the Twin Peaks S3 episodes but got guestlisted to their show last night and was shocked at how good they were and how tight their harmonies were. Think Roy Orbison meets Patsy Cline meets the Everrly Brothers.

Also, Jordi or Chris Quinn?

Just toured FAME studios down in Muscle Shoals for the 3rd time and this was the first time I met a Allman family member while there, so down with the Orbison/Cline comp and will check them out.

Jordi over Quinn

What works in Miami is directly tied to Riley providing the coaches with a buffer via his ownership stake, trust he’s built with Arison and Riley’s patience with coaches developing and knowing how important organizational stability is via his own coaching arch.

They’ve created a college program like system with the lure of the beach and tax breaks to always attract at least 2nd level stars and ring chasing vets and then convince them to buy in to the college program collective to make playoff runs… you can’t replicate that in Cleveland.

Fruit from that tree has tried in other cities, with other organizational structures and it just doesn’t work.

You have to appreciate Riley’s unique power and if you do, you won’t overvalue the individual pieces that comprise the collective. (Quiet as it’s kept, really feeling Max Strus is JAG and would not overvalue any other player, coach, equipment guy or nacho vendor associated with Heat culture unless you’re bringing the source of it all with them).

So… meh, to Quinn and don’t feel he’s on the same level as Jordi who has gotten it on his own, in multiple orgs including cutting his teeth and learning to walk as a coach, here.

Rather than ironic, I'd say this would be our goal with our second unit. Remember when Cedi and Rubio were together and killed second units when our starters rested? I thought this was a distinct possibility when we went on our run with Garland and Mobley out. I expected our 2nd unit to come back and dominate once the starters came back. It took a while, I'd say.
