Seven of the Browns' eight draft picks are now under contract.
Third-round pick Charlie Frye signed a four-year deal late Wednesday night. He was set to check in to the team's training camp hotel after signing his contract and was due to report for meetings and practice Thursday morning.
The first full-squad, open to the public practice of training camp is Friday afternoon.
Frye enters camp in a battle for the backup quarterback job behind Trent Dilfer. Frye and first-year man Josh Harris split time during spring workouts, and the Browns signed veteran Doug Johnson as an insurance policy last month.
Frye's signing leaves first-round pick Braylon Edwards, the number three overall pick in April's draft, as the Browns' only unsigned rookie.
Coach Romeo Crennel said last week he was hopeful Edwards would be signed in time for the start of camp, but he also said the team will move forward if he's not.
"A lot of times those high draft choices hold out," Crennel said. "If that occurs we just have to deal with it. We'd like for him to be there on time, but if he's not we'll work with the guys who are there and try to catch him up when he does get in."
Just six of the 32 first-round picks were signed as of late Wednesday night. San Francisco signed number one overall pick Alex Smith on Monday.
A native of Willard, Ohio, Frye shattered almost every University of Akron passing record in his college career and won Senior Bowl MVP honors in January before being drafted by the team he grew up rooting for with the 67th overall pick in this year's draft.
Frye is one of six Browns draft picks to sign a four-year contract. Second-round safety Brodney Pool signed a five-year deal Monday.
This signing leaves only the 3rd overall pick Braylon Edwards left to sign. Hopefully he can get in there soon and get adjusted into the offense...In other news pertaining to Edwards' deal Alex Smith just signed a 6 year 51 million dollar deal not only is that the largest rookie deal half the money 25.5 or so is "GUARANTEED" hmm just food for thought since Braylon went 2 selections later. And in other news the Pittsburgh Steelers came to terms with 1st round TE Heath Miller.
