Cavs Training Camp Smorgasbord

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
For those who have time, the actual interview scrums these quotes come from can usually be found on the Cavs website or Cavs YouTube Channel. Get far better sense of meaning with full context, inflection and tone, etc.

Listening to more of the Chase Down Pod interviews, really enjoyed the Niang one.

He specifically credited the Cavs and JBB as he immediately noticed from day one here that the young guys all had winning habits and work ethic, something he said has not always been the case in his various stops along the NBA.

Here’s the full interview and if you go to the Cavs YouTube and click on Videos, you will see all the Media Day Chase Down Pod interviews + the Day 1 and Day 2 post practice interviews

Also, I want to be clear, I know the majority of press conferences and interviews are very safe, coach/athlete speak. Of course none of these guys are going to say anything bad about their new teammates or coaches. But they also don’t have to say much at all so when they give specific examples or praise on what they’ve seen and felt as an outsider come into the organization from other winning organizations, it’s still nice and occasionally relevant to hear.

Fedor had a podcast. Not much of note but there were a few things.

Most of the players are talking about the goal being to win a playoff series. A few mentioned the "C" word, but generally there's a sense they need to start by taking "the next step". It's easier to go from bad to good than from good to great, so it gets harder from here.

Last year the Cavs went from being a play-in team to the 4th seed. Some feel it happened quicker and more smoothly than expected and there wasn't much adversity last year, which didn't help in the playoffs. Bickerstaff is planning on trying to put them in more "uncomfortable" situations this year so they learn to get "comfortable with the uncomfortable".

Donovan Mitchell did a ton of things in the off-season to get ready for this year. He recruited Strus, Niang, and Jerome. He organized two players' mini-camps. He was in constant contact with the coaches about how the scheme will change this year. Mitchell is very happy and has a high level of belief in the organization.

Darius Garland took the loss to the Knicks hard and was in the weight room all the time. He resented getting posted up by the Knicks and realizes that with Strus replacing Okoro at the 3 he will have to guard some of the big guards that Okoro checked last year, like James Harden, for example. Fedor expects to see "a different Darius Garland this year".

Even Mobley said his goal is to make the All-Star team this year but the numbers are stacked against him with Embiid, Giannis, Bam Adebayo, Jimmy Butler, Jayson Tatum, Pascal Siakam, and others in the front court.

The Cavs are making a clear committment to changing and diversifying their offense and not being so dependent on the pick-and-roll, although with DG and DM being so proficient it will continue to be a big part of the offense.

Have whom is left from the intrepid CAVS press corps told that they are not allowed to ask how our rook the next KD is doing?

It will be huge for this team if Mobley is good enough to be an all-star.

Well he did gain 7 lbs in 4 months. Maybe a rounding error for a 7 footer. They all seem thrilled.

From Fedor's column yesterday:

...sources have described this as the hardest -- and most spirited -- camp of the J.B. Bickerstaff era. He is already planning other in-season disruptions. There will be growing pains while trying to integrate an altered offensive system and new rotational pieces. But it’s clear all parties have seen glimpses this retooled roster’s potential.

Bickerstaff let the cat out of the bag on the Cavs' new offensive scheme. They're going with six players this year.

If you have Darius, Donovan, Caris and a big playing on the strong side, then you have another big guy and Max playing on the weak side and you eliminate the weak side help because now they are chasing Max off screens and you are playing 3 on 2 advantage basketball on the strong side. That threat just opens the floor...

Yeah, that should create a lot of open shots. No word yet on how they're going to hide the sixth player from the refs and the opposing coaches.

Why didn't we think of this before?

Dude will likely just hang out right on the out of bounds line and pop in as the defense moves away from his side of the court. It’s really a brilliant move by JBB
