There have been many posts about the players who might be available for the Cavs, but I haven't seen a list of expiring contracts for this year-- the kind of list that someone like Sacramento's GM (Geoff Petrie) might be pondering if they want to save $. Some GMs of course will aim to get salary relief over a longer period, by swapping longer contracts for those that expire in 2010, which this post does not address. So this post about 2008-2009 needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

But if a GM is looking specifically for contracts that expire at the end of the 2008-2009 season, these are the most likely trading opportunities.

Nets, Stromile Swift (6.2 M) (only if the Nets want to gain long-term salary in a playoff push)

Sixers, Andre Miller (10M) (unlikely to want long-term contract if they get rid of Miller)

Bulls, Drew Gooden (7.1 M) (same)

Bulls, Ben Gordon (6.4M) (same)

Cavs, Wally (13M) (no wonder other teams are wondering about his availability)

Pacers, Nesterovic (8.4M) (maybe, but Pacers probably want salary flexibility)

Pacers, Marquis Daniels (6.8 M) (same)

Heat, Shawn Marion (17.2M) (Heat may want to hold onto cap flexibility and youth as they build)

Mavericks, Jason Kidd (21.4 M) (If trading Kidd, Mavs likely rebuilding and shedding salary)

Minnesota, Juwan Howard (7.3 M) (Twolves want to shed salary)

Minnesota, Jason Collins (6.2 M) (Twolves want to shed salary)

Portland, Raef Lafrentz (12.7 M) (Could conceivably trade him for missing pieces)

Portland, Martell Webster (3.5 M) (Could want to trade him for missing pieces)

Phoenix, Steve Nash (12.25 M) (If trading Nash, more likely to rebuild than take on salary)

For teams looking purely for salary relief (trading long-term talent for short-term contracts), Portland, the Cavs, and the Heat look like the most likely options. Portland can sweeten the deal with a lot of young talent but it's unclear whether they'll be willing to make those moves this season as the young team grows up. Raef LaFrentz has such a big contract, they must thinking hard about using it in a trade. Portland will be under the salary cap next year (at 46 M) if they don't make any moves at all and just let their current expiring contracts run out. Like Portland, Cavs can afford to give up Wally more easily than most other teams since he is a bench player but also have to weigh how much else they want to part with. Miami with Marion is the 3rd option but I can't see that the Heat will want to sweeten the deal much as they're just starting to build. If they move Marion for a long-term contract, they may have to give up too much in addition to his expiring deal. Plus they're losing a starter in the process.

Now that you beat Boston, Portland, it's time start losing, forget about trading, and realizing you have a *long* way to go.:chuckles:

After Portland, Cavs, and Heat (in that order), other potential teams for salary relief purposes in particular could include Indiana, the Bulls, and Phoenix but they are far lower possibilities.

-----

Below is a list of all contracts over $4.5M that expire in 2008-2009, according to Hoopshype, including my rationale on why I haven't included some of the players below in the summary above.

Celtics
None over 1.2 M

Nets
Stromile Swift (6.2 M)
Devin Harris (7.8 M) - they better re-sign him or they're really toast.

Knicks - they still want to shed salary, not take it on.
Stephon Marbury (21 M)
Malik Rose (7.8 M)

Sixers
Andre Miller (10M) - they trade him to rebuild but not to replace him with long-term contracts

Raptors
Anthony Parker (4.5M) - pretty cheap and plays a role.

Bulls - Bulls couldn't afford to give Gordon a deal. Not sure they want more salary now.
Drew Gooden (7.1M)
Ben Gordon (6.4M)

Cavs - $13M offers a lot of salary relief, so he's a potential trading chip.
Wally (13 M)

Detroit - I don't see many scenarios where the Pistons want long-term contracts to replace these two.
Iverson (21M)
Rasheed (13.7M)

Indiana
Rasho Nesterovic (8.4 M)
Marquis Daniels (6.8 M) - team holds option for next year

Bucks
Damon Jones (4.5 M) - not that much $

Atlanta - Both players are part of the Hawks rotation. Only if they fall apart due to injuries.
Mike Bibby (15 M)
Zaza Pachulia (4 M)

Charlotte
None over 1M

Miami - It's a tough call if they want salary flexibility in the future. Doubtful they want to trade youth/picks.
Shawn Marion (17.2 M)

Orlando
None over 3M (Bogans at 2.9M)

Wizards
None over 1M

Mavericks - If they trade him, they're rebuilding and won't want to get rid of picks/youth for someone good.
Jason Kidd (21.4 M)

Rockets - too important to their rotation in the team's current incarnation.
Ron Artest (8.4 M)

Memphis
recently waived Antoine Walker (8.8M), so no other sizable contracts. clearly didn't want to take on long-term deal.

New Orleans
None over 1.1 M

Spurs
None over 1.2 M

Nuggets - Smith in particular is part of their rotation
J.R. Smith (5 M)
Chucky Atkins (3.5 M)

Minnesota - They want to shed salary not to gain it.
Juwan Howard (7.3 M)
Jason Collins (6.2 M)

Portland
Raef Lafrentz (12.7 M)
Martell Webster (3.5 M)

Oklahoma City - They want to shed salary not to gain it.
Chris Wilcox (6.75 M)
Donyell Marshall (6 M)
Desmond Mason (5.3 M)
Joe Smith (4.8 M)
Robert Swift (3.6 M)

Utah
No one over 2M

Golden State - They want to shed salary, and the team is going nowhere right now.
Adonal Foyle (6.8 M)

Clippers
None over 2.5M

Lakers - Both are too important to their rotation
Lamar Odom (11.4 M)
Trevor Ariza (2.9 M)

Phoenix - Hard to see Suns trading Nash this year unless they crumble.
Steve Nash (12.25 M, team option next year)

Sacramento - They want to shed salary
Bobby Jackson (6M)

Final note: if this is common knowledge, if someone already did this and sticked it, if everyone on this board knows about it but me, please leave me in my ignorance and don't tell me about it. Just play along with me and my hoopshype excursion.
