But the question is, should the Cavs even try to keep him?

I can understand the belief that a coaching change would benefit him, but I remain unconvinced. He's still the 4th best SG on this team and if Emoni develops the way we all hope he does, that will be another guy that should be playing ahead of Isaac.

If he was 3-4 inches taller I'd be all for it as the prototypical 3 and D wing off the bench, but he isnt.
Because he is our best point of attack defender against guards and its not close. He is one of the best in the NBA at this. Extending Okoro on a cheaper deal is a complete no brainer. Factor in the improvements on offense and we can probably get him on a real bargain deal.

I am also not sure where you are getting him being our 4th best SG right now either. DM is obviously better, and Caris is by default, but imo Okoro is more valuable in the longterm than Caris. Are we considering DG as an SG now then? Or is Mobley playing the 2?

Emoni developing in the next season is a pipe dream. He is so far from being a 12th man right now, let alone a relevant rotational player. It was a fair gamble, but his only value at the moment is that he is a willing shooter, not a great one. Factor in his limited defense and the limits to the rest of his offensive game and any leap from Emoni in 2025 would be a miracle. Don't get me wrong, I hope he develops into a decent NBA player or better, but realistically, that is not something we see before 2027.

My Cavs SG depth chart is really this:

1 Mitchell
2 Strus
3 LeVert
4 Okoro

A very strong argument can be made that Merrill should be neck and neck with Okoro for the 4th best SG too. The Cavs not having any competent or non injury prone guys who are threes, doesnt change the fact that we have SG's playing out of position.

But, I agree that Okoro is the best defender on this team against guards, well at least against bigger guards. He has always struggled with quicker guys, ala Trae. I'm just not sure that his offense will ever make him playable in a playoff series, unless we want to continue to try to slog out 92-89 point wins.

I think it really depends on how the front office wants to reshape the roster going forward. Like if a new GM comes in and it will really depend on the vision they have for this roster. I could see Levert and Strus being moved as part a bigger reshaping the roster.

It's a reason why I think if they do fire JBB and Koby, they need to bring in someone with a clear vision for this team.

I put Okoro ahead of LaVert simply because Okoro is unlikely to stack up those blinders-on possessions the way LaVert does. He doesn't stop the ball, and that is a huge advantage.

Fair enough. I have Strus mapped as a 3 for now but maybe his best longterm position is the SG. Depends on what other moves we make. Either way, I think Okoro is our only real defensive option against guards right now and I would not let that go for free otherwise you end up like Phx

Our problem with Okoro is team construction. You just can't have a bunch of non-shooters non-threats on the floor at once in today's NBA. But when he is paired with Mobley & Allen that is exactly what we have. So Okoro can't start. But Okoro's best skill is shutting down the other teams best perimeter offensive weapon - who is always going to be starter. We've seen it in the last two playoff series. When rotations shrink and we need him to shut down an opposing star, we can't play him because there is nothing he can do on offense with the lineups we are trotting out. He can now hit an open 3, but playoff intensity defense isn't giving up open 3's unless the other guys on the court are threats.
