For the most part, the Cavs have been ruled out in making a move for a marquee free agent because of the moves they've made and the cap space being eaten up pretty much.

I was wondering, if the Cavs could still use Wally's contract? Do they still have Bird rights? If so they could still pull off a big move via sign and trade right?

Do Bird rights expire after a certain amount of time? I was thinking of Aaron McKie and Keith Vanhorn being made available in trades and wondered would we have the same options even though Wally wasn't signed this year....Please Advise

As long as Wally doesn't officially retire from the league or sign with another team, we will have his Bird rights.

Yes, I believe so. Both Aaron McKie and Keith Van Horn were a traded a few seasons after they had last played. I could see us using Wally in a sign in trade if a good deal came up.

It is possible but unlikely imo. The team recieving Wally would have to have him on the roster for a full season. Only way this happens if we take back a bad long term contract. I am not sure Ferry or more importantly, Gilbert is willing to do that. We would have to sweeten the deal by adding young talent or draft picks. I am not sure who is out there that this would work for. Amare if he opts in? Maybe. But I say there is a 10% chance we use Wally for anything.

Ok so the caveat would be them having to keep him on the books for a whole season. That more than anything will be the big hold up. Thanks for all of those who replied..

I would think so. In this scenerio, a buy out is not an option as a full one year is required to be paid on a S&T. The deal has to be for 3 years, but the last 2 years can be team options.

It just seems to rich to my blood for most teams at this point.

What if for the example you gave of Amare we traded West, Boobie, JJ and signed Wally to the remaining value of the deal Amare would recieve. To me that doesn't seem to unlikely because Amare is worth it and I am sure Gilert would pay an extra 8ish million a year to have a rotation of Mo/Parker/LeBron/Jamison/Amare. Plus this year even if we do a S&T it will not be more money than we are paying this year because Shaq will be coming off the books.

I doubt Phoenix accepts that deal. I actually believe if you take off Gibson they will accept it as they do not want the Gibson's salary. They can buyout West (non-guaranateed deal) and Wally. They would probably still have room to put a max player that wants to be there, next to Nash. (If Sarver somehow becomes not cheap :D)

I think everytime we try and trade for Amare, Phoenix will get cold feet and pull the offer. But yes, on paper that works. But I dont see phoenix going for it.

I agree Idoubt that will happen, and honestly I don't want Amare now, I would much rather us try and concentrate our efforts on a long term C (Okafor :fingersx:) or a long term SG/SF to put next to Lebron. I hope we revisit Iggy, but it will be harder to get done now and will almost surely involve us taking Brands albatross, but is it worth it, IMO yes as it would be a great way for us to limit both AJs minutes and Brands as well as getting Iggy, but it would almost completely ruin any shot AV has at PT unless we don't re sign Z or Shaq. Lots of decisions this offseason.
