The Cleveland Browns are not missing too many pieces on either side of the ball. The missing piece is a coach that can inspire, motivate and discipline the team. Shaun Smith punching Brady Quinn shows this team’s lacks leadership. Cleveland needs an identity and that's what a new coach will bring to the table.

Defensively under Romeo Crennel, Cleveland ran a 3-4 defense that did not fit its core players. The Browns need to be a 4-3 team defensively. They have two defensive tackles in Shaun Rogers and Corey Williams. Kamerion Wimbley is best suited as a defensive end like Dwight Freeney or Patrick Kerney. Make him a defensive end so he can concentrate on pass rushing.

That leaves an opening at the other defensive end. Terrell Suggs, Julius Peppers, Rocky Bernard and Bertram Berry are all available in free agency. Peppers is intriguing as another pass rusher coming from the outside. Start with the line and everything else will follow. It's what the field was to the field of dreams. “If you build it, they will come.”

The linebacking core needs some work but fortunately in a 4-3 you need one less linebacker. Andra Davis is still effective so keep him around and see what he can do in a better system. Put him at outside linebacker and pick up a free agent middle linebacker.

Ray Lewis, Bart Scott, Jonathon Vilma, Karlos Dansby and Mike Peterson are there to choose from. Lewis will resign with Baltimore. Vilma or Peterson are very attractive. Peterson is already 32 years old so Vilma should be targeted. Try and build for the future and not for a single year.

The other outside linebacker can be Willie McGinest. You need to keep a veteran leader on the team. He is not what he used to be but he is a level headed player that can help coach in the huddle. I guarantee Bill Belichick would take him back. The linebacking core would still be a little weak but should be capable.

The number one free agent target for Cleveland needs to be corner back Nnamdi Asomugha. The Browns need a shutdown corner to take half the field away and allow their safeties to do their jobs better. Brodney Pool and Sean Jones should get one more year to prove something.

As far as the other starting cornerback, let everyone battle it out in camp and see what happens. The Browns do have some talent at cornerback bust need to give them some help by generating more of a pass rush. With the personnel upgrades and the system change that can happen.

Offensively for the Browns all things start up front on the line. They made huge strides to improve the left side with Joe Thomas and Eric Steinbach. Hank Fraley has to go. They need a better leader to call out the blocking schemes at the line of scrimmage.

Free agents possibilities include Jeff Saturday and Matt Birk. Everyone saw how poor Indianapolis did without Saturday. The man proved his value. There also needs to be improvements made to the right side of the offensive lines.

Cleveland is fortunate in that by getting rid of Phil Savage and Crennel that Kellen Winslow may now want to stick around. Winslow may be injury prone but he is the tight end they need to succeed.

Receiver play hurt the Browns this year. Braylon Edwards did in particular by dropping all those passes. Edwards should be traded but his value is probably very low and he will end up staying. Joe Jurevicius wants to come back and he is a great possession receiver. Donte Stallworth is a product of the NFL hype machine and should be traded for anything.

The Browns need a running game. Jamal Lewis is a good man but his best days are behind him. I feel a Jerome Bettis type role is best suited for him. There are several running back free agents available.

Brandon Jacobs, Derrick Ward, Cedric Benson, Dominic Rhodes and Darren Sproles are a few names that will be available. Sproles is the lightening the Browns need in the running games. He is not an every down back which is why Lewis should be kept around.

Brady Quinn is this team’s quarterback. That's what happens when you draft a quarterback in Round 1 of the NFL Draft. The Browns don't have a choice.

So which coaches can do this for Cleveland? Two can: Mike Shanahan and Marty Schottenheimer.

Randy Lerner, please get a coach that will do this. Otherwise you may lose lifelong fans.

This year’s Browns were horrible and embarrassing. Get back to hard nosed, Cleveland Browns football.

Go Browns! Woof, Woof!
