RIP BILL RUSSELL

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Kind of fun fact about Russell and Chamberlain: Both were track and field standouts who learned basketball as a second sport. In Oakland, he ran the 400 meters and completed in high jump before developing into a two time state champ in high school hoops.

Look at this shit... in Chuck Taylors!

In college Russell was an Olympic caliber high jumper - ranked 7th in the WORLD his senior year! Per Wikipedia he tied the eventual gold medalist in the 1956 Olympics in a track meet. Russell didn’t bother to compete in the Olympics but he was clearly one of the top track and field athletes on the planet. You don’t hear as much about it as you do with Wilt because Russell didn’t brag incessantly about himself, just about his team accomplishments :chuckle:

Nobody understood professional basketball more than him. It’s a team game, not an individual sport. He was the ultimate winner because he was the ultimate team player.

There’s no way Evan Mobley (and likely his dad) have not watched film of Bill. He blocks shots the way Bill did, except he really doesn’t block shots - he steals them.

Yessssssssss that’s why I say the NBA should permanently retire #6
Will never forget the story my mother told me about Mr Russell. He was front and center when Dr King made his “I Have a Dream” speech and Dr King asked him to come up on stage Mr Russell declined and told Dr King “No thank Sir….I haven’t done enough to be up there”.
Such a humble man.
