Welcome to Cleveland, Alex Wright - DE - UAB

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
My thoughts:

Has the perfect game and body to play what the Browns want on the opposite side of Garrett. He’s got dynamite in his hands, blows offensive linemen away with them too. Has a decent variety of moves that can get him to the QB.

Can probably add a bit more strength to his body, which is crazy considering how big he already is. Has positional flexibility. Can UAB translate to the NFL? He played like a beast against the most physical front in CFB with Georgia.

NFL Scout takes on Wright:
14. ALEX WRIGHT, Alabama-Birmingham (6-5, 271, no 40, 3-4): Third-year junior, three-year starter. “More of a base end type,” said one scout. “Power, stiff, long (arms were 34). Not a lot of pass-rush ability. He’s a fourth-round guy.” Finished with 91 tackles (19 for loss) and 12 ½ sacks. “Small-town Alabama (Elba),” a second scout said. “He is raw. Looks like he’s barely lifted weights (a position-low 15 reps on the bench), but he does. There’s a lot of potential with this kid. He’s got some ability off the edge. Obviously, he’s come out too soon. He could have helped himself by staying or transferring up perhaps. He’s got a pec injury and he hasn’t run, which I think will hurt him. He’s a much better prospect than the defensive end (Jordan Smith) who went last year to Jacksonville in the fourth round. This kid’s a much better kid, too.”

If you are dying for see new Browns content, here is a great pre-draft breakdown of Alex Wright:

Nothing earth-shattering, but a few takeaways:

1. Great athleticism which allowed him to move around and play different alignments, including drop zone coverage.

2. Didn't have to bend tight around tackles because of opponent quality, but could learn with his athletic traits.

3. High motor in pursuit, scrapes the line well.

4. Some bad habits, like putting his head down in bull rush.
