With all of the trade rumors flying around, I thought it would be a good idea to look at what trades are even allowed as I think most of the rumors floating around aren't even allowed.
Unless I'm missing something, trades that happen before July have a bunch of restrictions.
- 2012-13 team salary and cap space restrict trades. Just because teams have space freeing up this summer doesn't mean that they can take on that salary now. So Boston can't trade Pierce now to save money, they can only trade him to help another team save money. Team's can't use their 2013-14 cap space in trades until July 8th.
- while expiring contracts count against the team's cap, those players can't be traded. This part should be obvious.
- contracts with 2013-14 player or team options also can't be traded. This wasn't as obvious. Dallas can't trade Marion, we can't trade Speights.
- any team who has already traded a 2014 first round draft pick, including pending protected picks, can't trade their 2013 pick before the draft without getting back either a 2013 pick or an unprotected 2014 pick back. They can trade those picks after they are taken. So we could move 31 and 33 for Dallas' first round pick after it is taken, but we can't do that before the draft, then use 19+13 to move into the top 10.
Unless I am missing some special rules in effect this week, the combination of all of these makes many of the trade rumors that are being reported impossible to happen as reported.
